My grandmother used to turn on the gospel hour every Sunday afternoon and that choir would come through clear as anything, forty years she sang with them and I didn't know her name until this obituary but I knew that sound. We'd sit on her porch in Durham with the radio propped in the window. A hundred years old. That's a long time to keep singing.

My mother called this morning when she saw it on the news. She said he turned the Lyon opera house into something new back in the sixties and seventies. I only know him from a short clip of the Boreades staging in Aix someone posted once, 1982 I think it was. Ninety seven years old, a long run in that world.

My sister called from Raleigh this morning to tell me. I only knew him from the Oil for Food headlines back in 2005, the scandal that seemed to swallow his whole career in the press. Eighty eight is a long life to end under that shadow.
