For Frank Bridel · 22d ago

My sister called from Indiana last night, she'd seen it on some Swiss site I sent her once. 101 years old, started at the Gazette de Lausanne back in 1949 or so, Paris correspondent, editor, the whole postwar run. I only knew him through a book on Swiss neutrality a professor gave me years ago. Strange to hear about him secondhand like that, over the phone, so far from where any of it happened.

For Mary Stack · 13 Sept 2026

Mary Stack proved that disability is not a limit on what you can accomplish. A real American.

For Pierfranco Vianelli · 8 Sept 2026

A small-town champion who came home and built his legacy with his hands. Italy lost one of the real ones.

For David Fair · 4 Sept 2026

David Fair showed us that you didn't need a conservatory degree to make art that mattered. A librarian and a musician and a painter and a writer. That's a life well spent.

Same, I didn't see this coming either.

Lovely that she thought to call you.
