For Ali Haroun · 16h ago

Just finished a chapter on the Algerian War last week and his name was all over it. 99 years old, last member of that High Council of State still alive. Strange to read about someone and then see they died days later.

For Joe Feeney · 1d ago

just put on Danny Boy after seeing this. still gives me chills, 76 years old, gone.

For Pierre Hazette · 4d ago

so I never heard of this guy until about an hour ago, found the article through a rabbit hole on Ambiorix and the Eburones, which is funny because that's exactly what pulled me in, apparently he wrote novels using that same story, Caesar's Gallic Wars stuff, and I've got a whole shelf of Rubicon era books so that's my in I guess. anyway he was 87, taught Latin and Greek for years before he went into politics, ran education for the French side of Belgium a while back, and from what I'm reading people over there actually liked him, which is rare for a politician anywhere. there's a school named after him in the village he grew up in, Marneffe, that part got me a little, teaching in the morning and then one day they name the building after you. not my country, not my politics, but a guy who spends his life on kids and old languages and somehow ends up a minister too, that's a path you don't see much here. edit: fixed the spelling of Eburones, autocorrect had opinions

For Dorothy Saxe · 7d ago

100 years old. That's a full life by any measure. Sending condolences to her children, Loren, Ellen and Joel.

For Pavel Anton · 8d ago

My grandmother was from Bălți and kept a reel to reel of that teachers' folk choir he used to run there, we played it at her funeral years ago. Never knew his name until today, just knew the sound. 90 years old, that's a full life given to other people's voices.

For Eli Rygg · 9d ago

I'd never heard of her until this morning. Don't really know what to say, but 71 and three kids and a whole country's childhood tied up in one little red house, that's a life. Rest easy.

For Duane Ward · 11d ago

Not a guy I followed closely but 45 saves in 93 for a team that actually won it all, that's real. Solid bullpen arm.

For Neil Henderson · 29d ago

My mom used to play Saturday Night on the drive to my grandparents' place in Cedar Rapids, every single Sunday. Didn't know his name till today. 73.

For Carla Ann Chauvin · 20 Sept 2026

70 years old and her family said she had "a sense of fun and fellowship." That's a good line to leave behind.

For Peter Hermann · 19 Sept 2026

Never met the guy, never saw him kick a ball, but I remember my uncle pointing him out on the touchline during Bayern matches back in like 2011 and saying that's the one who keeps Heynckes sane. Sad to hear he's gone at 74.

For Art Garnes · 18 Sept 2026

Never met him, but 'a true servant' sums it up. Alliance was lucky.

For Brent Peterson · 11 Sept 2026

Red Wings drafted him in '78, 12th overall. Broken leg year one, but he came back and played 620 games. That's the kind of thing people forget about now.

For Joseph Arnaouti · 7 Sept 2026

Stayed in Damascus through everything. That takes real conviction.

For Ilfinesh Qannoo · 7 Sept 2026

Her songs kept a whole language alive when the state wanted it dead. That takes courage most of us will never need.

For Jim Geoghan · 6 Sept 2026

Grew up watching Suite Life reruns with my kids. Never knew the name behind it until today. That's real legacy, I think.

For Peter Gill · 28 Aug 2026

My grandfather saw him in a film once and said he had a face you believed. I'm sorry I never got to see his work on stage.

For David Clayton-Thomas · 4 Aug 2026

Spinning Wheel changed something in rock music. A kid from nothing who learned guitar in jail and made it to Woodstock. That's a real American story, even if it started in Kingston.

For David Johansen · 29 Sept 2025

Watched him on Sirius a few times. The man loved music the way some people love breathing.
