"You start to appreciate the experience of being there, wherever you are." Read that in a magazine years ago, never forgot it. 84 years old.

14 years old when he took the musnad. Read about Khairpur years ago, didn't expect to see it end this way.

Funny how you remember where you were. I was reading something about the Pueblo Revival stuff in New Mexico, totally unrelated, and my wife's cousin who went through UNM architecture mentioned Forbes Isais had passed, and I sat there a while because I'd just been thinking about that whole region, Santa Fe, the adobe buildings, how the school shaped so much of that look and feel for decades. Never studied architecture myself, just travel through it, but you hear the name of the first woman dean there in 2010 and you realize how long that took, 2010, that's not that long ago really. Anyway. 76. Edit: her partner Susan Lawton went before her I guess, that got me too.

My parents took me to Carnival Cabaret in Palm Springs when I was twelve. Gypsy made the whole night feel like we were part of something special. He had that gift.

Watched him grow that show from a parking lot idea into something massive. Never got full of himself about it either.
For Byron Sher · 13 Sept 2026
My father used to say Byron Sher was one of the few politicians you could trust to keep his word. That meant something in Nevada when we were fighting over water. We lost a good man.

The Hawke biography is still the one that matters. Fifty years on, still the best account of his time.

The man played guitar in a comedy troupe and made it work. That takes real skill. Rest easy.
For Cheryl Hall · 15 Aug 2026
Watched Citizen Smith as a kid in the seventies. Shirley was the heart of that show, and Cheryl made her real in a way that stuck with you. Sad to hear she's gone.
For Len Brown · 15 Aug 2026
I was a teenager when Garbage Pail Kids came out and I thought they were the funniest things ever. Never thanked the people who made that happen. Len Brown, thank you.

Grew up watching The Saint reruns with my dad. He had that charm without being mean about it. Lost a good one.
For Claudette Colvin · 18 Jan 2026
Claudette Colvin rode that bus on March 2, 1955. Nine months before Parks. The textbooks caught up late, but she was there first and she mattered.

He fought so hard for so long. Sending love to Susan.

Yes. And she made it seem like you could do more than one thing and it would all be okay.
