My cousin went to Rosedale Heights in the late 90s and used to tell us about the principal who knew every kid's name in the hallway. Read about him just now, 42 years in the same board. That kind of staying is its own quiet achievement.

My mom called me at 6am my time to tell me, she'd seen it on French news before I was even awake. First thing I thought of was that scene where they're in Guatemala talking about happiness like it's a crop you can actually grow. I've been trying to grow my own version of that ever since, badly, in a backyard in Wisconsin. 44 is nothing.

My dad kept an old almanac of Olympic records and used to quiz me on obscure ones over breakfast. Grodotzki was his favourite because nobody else could ever answer it, the only German to medal in the 10,000. I still can't believe I just read that name in an obituary instead of a trivia question.
