My mother in law is from Kochi and she rang my wife in tears about this. I'd only ever seen him through clips she'd send over the years, the comic timing was something else even without understanding a word. 56 is no age.

Never followed Japanese politics closely but read a piece years ago about him turning that trucking firm around in his twenties, 1955, and it stuck with me. Ninety nine is a proper innings. Postal privatisation revolt was over my head at the time but the business rescue part I understood.

Grew up watching him coach, then spent decades watching him break down the game on telly. That mullet was legendary. He had a gift for making you understand what was actually happening out there, you know? Not just the score, but the story. Proper commentator. Will miss him.
