Ádám Rothermel was a Hungarian goalkeeper who won an Olympic silver medal with Hungary at the 1972 Munich Games and three national championships with Újpesti Dózsa. Known to everyone in Hungarian football as Rotyi, he later spent years as a police detective in Budapest. His death, at the age of 78, was announced on 7 November 2026.

He was born in Budapest on 14 June 1948. His cousin Anna Rothermel, ten years his senior, was a world champion handball goalkeeper and later a sports administrator, so goalkeeping ran in the family.

Rothermel kept goal for Tatabányai Bányász from 1967 to 1972, reaching the final of the Hungarian Cup with the club in 1972. That year, while still a Tatabánya player, he was part of the Hungarian squad that took silver in the men's football tournament at the Munich Olympics. Between 1970 and 1976 he played 13 times for the Hungarian national team. The Munich silver, won after a final against Poland, remains the last Olympic football medal won by Hungary.

In 1974 he moved to Újpesti Dózsa, where he stayed until 1981. With the purple and whites he won the Hungarian championship in 1974-75, 1977-78 and 1978-79 and the Hungarian Cup in 1975, and he was in goal for Újpest's famous 8-3 derby win over Ferencváros. After a season with Salgótarján in 1982 he finished his playing career at Soroksár, having made 208 appearances in the Hungarian top division.

Alongside the end of his football career he built a second one. In 1980 he began studying at the Police Officers' College, was commissioned as an officer in 1983 and started work as a detective at the Újpest police station. He later moved to the Budapest police headquarters, first to the robbery squad and then to the homicide group, and retired as a police officer.

His family said he had fought a six week illness with great courage before his death, and that details of his funeral would follow. Újpest FC, the Hungarian Olympic Committee and the national news agency MTI paid tribute, and friends including the writer Ede Dunai remembered a cheerful man with a ready sense of humour.
