Amel Baccouche was a Tunisian actress whose career on stage, radio and television spanned some five decades. To millions of Tunisian viewers she was Jannet, the fortune teller of Choufli Hal, the much loved sitcom broadcast from 2005 to 2009, a role that made her one of the most recognisable faces of Tunisian television comedy.

She was born on 14 March 1949 in Bab Souika, in the heart of Tunis, into a family of artists. She took her first steps on stage in school theatre and later trained in dramatic arts. Her love of the stage led her to give up a job in the health sector to join the theatre troupe of Le Kef, with which she played many roles. Alongside her acting she taught theatre education, a second career that Al Chourouk highlighted in a 2025 interview looking back on her work.

From the 1990s she became a familiar presence in Tunisian television drama. She played Om Elatti in Abdelkader Jerbi's El Douar in 1992, Hadja Saida in the first season of El Khottab Al Bab in 1996, and roles in Dhafayer (2001), Gamret Sidi Mahrous (2002), where she played Zneikha Mahrous, Ikhwa wa Zaman (2003) and Hssabet w Aqabet (2004). Choufli Hal, created by Slaheddine Essid and Abdelkader Jerbi, then gave her the part of Jannet alongside Kamel Touati, Mouna Noureddine and Sofiène Chaâri, and the character entered the collective memory of Tunisian audiences.

She continued working well into her sixties and seventies, with parts in Pour les beaux yeux de Catherine (2012), Yawmiyat Imraa (2013), Lemnara (2017), Elli Lik Lik (2018) and the fifth season of Awled Moufida (2020). She also lent her voice to radio drama, and in interviews she spoke frankly about the profession, telling Mosaïque FM that competence was no longer the measure of an actor and that looks had come to matter more than talent.

Amel Baccouche died on Tuesday 20 October 2026, aged 77. Her death was announced by her son, and the news was carried by Business News, La Presse de Tunisie, Webdo, Babnet and Radio Mosaïque FM. No cause of death was made public. She is remembered as an actress rooted in the theatre whose warmth and comic timing made Jannet a household name across Tunisia.

My grandmother used to put Choufli Hal on every week at her place in Jersey City, satellite dish and all, and I'd sit there not understanding half the jokes but laughing anyway because Jannet made her laugh so hard. 77. Didn't know that until today.
