Angelo Pierleoni was an Italian footballer and coach from Celano, in the Marsica area of Abruzzo. An attacking midfielder with good technique and an eye for goal, he played more than 350 official matches over two decades, reached Serie A with Cesena and Ascoli, and was part of promotion winning sides at Fermana, Teramo, Ascoli and Avezzano. He died in Fermo on 18 October 2026, aged 63, after a long illness.

Pierleoni was born in Celano on 15 December 1962 into a footballing family: his older brothers Luigi, known as Gigi, a long serving captain of Teramo, and Alessandro also played for years in Serie C and Serie D. He came through the Teramo youth system and made his professional debut for the club in the 1979-80 season, then spent time at Benevento before returning to Teramo.

At 21 he joined Fermana, where he was used as a forward and scored 17 goals in 50 matches over two seasons, winning the Campionato Interregionale in 1983-84 and promotion to Serie C2. Back at Teramo under the coach Giorgio Rumignani, he was one of the leading figures of the side that won Serie C2 in 1985-86. He then moved up to Serie B with Messina, where he scored ten goals in 1988-89 in the team coached by Zdenek Zeman, and had a short spell at Brescia.

He reached Serie A with Cesena, scoring three goals in 25 appearances, among them the goal in a 1-1 draw with Juventus. At Ascoli he helped win promotion to Serie A in 1990-91 under Nedo Sonetti and played in the top division in 1991-92, making 113 appearances and scoring nine goals for the club in all. In his career he played 52 Serie A matches with three goals and 131 Serie B matches with 20 goals. From 1994 he played for Avezzano, winning another Serie C2 title in 1995-96, before finishing his career in the regional leagues with Celano and Angizia Luco in 2001.

He then coached Fidelis Andria in 2002-03, worked on the technical staff at Celano and briefly led Luco Canistro in Serie D in 2010. He later settled in Fermo, where in March 2026 he married Edelweiss Ferri. He also had two sons, Jacopo and Alessandro.

Pierleoni died in Fermo on 18 October 2026 after a serious illness. Tributes came from Teramo, Fermana, Ascoli and Cesena supporters and from the mayor of Fermo, and his funeral was announced for the church of Santa Caterina in Fermo.

My dad used to put on old Serie A reruns on Sunday mornings, and the Cesena goal against Juventus was the one he'd always rewind. 63 is nothing. Rest well.
