Antonio Moscato was an Italian historian and Marxist activist who spent close to seventy years in the Trotskyist movement and taught the history of the labour movement at the University of Lecce. A prolific writer, he was best known for his studies of the Soviet bloc and its crisis, of Cuba and of Che Guevara, and for decades of work editing and writing for the press of the Italian section of the Fourth International.

Antonio Maria Moscato was born in Rome on 26 September 1938. He began university studies under the historian of religion Ambrogio Donini and later worked with the anthropologist Vittorio Lanternari, whose assistant he became at the University of Bari. In 1957 he began a collaboration and friendship with Livio Maitan, the leading figure of Italian Trotskyism, which shaped the rest of his political life. His first books, including a study of religious revolt in the countryside written with Maria Novella Pierini, appeared with the Rome publisher Samona e Savelli.

At the University of Lecce he taught the history of the labour movement, contemporary history and the history of Afro Asian countries, and supervised more than 250 graduates. His many books ranged from Sinistra e potere and Intellettuali e potere in URSS to Che Guevara, storia e leggenda, Breve storia di Cuba and Il risveglio dell'America Latina. He directed Bandiera Rossa, founded Critica Comunista, and wrote for Erre, Liberazione, Limes and other publications, while running a long lived website on the history of the workers' movement.

Politically he was a member of the Revolutionary Communist Groups, Proletarian Democracy and, from 1991, Communist Refoundation, for which he stood in the 1995 Apulian regional election and for the Senate in Lecce in 2001. In 1966 he was badly beaten by a group of neo fascists in Rome. He left Refoundation in 2007 for Sinistra Critica, and from 2013 belonged to Sinistra Anticapitalista.

For many decades his partner was Maria Novella Pierini, known as Titti, herself an activist in the same current. In his later years he lived in Recanati, in the Marche.

Moscato died in Recanati during the night of 24 October 2026, aged 88. Sinistra Anticapitalista, which learned the news as its national committee was about to meet, described him as a teacher to generations of activists and students and said it would work to preserve his memory and his writing.
