Chris Sorensen was an American firefighter, musician and entrepreneur who, with his younger brother Robin, founded Firehouse Subs in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1994 and built it into a national restaurant chain of more than 1,200 locations. He also co-founded the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which has given more than $118 million to fire, police and rescue services.
He was born Chris Randall Sorensen on 16 October 1960 in Jacksonville, the son of Robert and Wanda Sorensen. His father served 43 years with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, and his parents also ran San Jose Television, an independent television shop in the city. His first ambition was music. A gifted guitarist, he played professionally for several years and later sat in with acts including Earth, Wind and Fire, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Huey Lewis and the News, Lonestar and Foreigner.
He then followed his father into the fire service, working four years for Brevard County Fire Department and a year at Jacksonville International Airport before joining the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, where he spent more than ten years as an engineer and EMT.
In 1994 he and Robin, who shared a love of cooking, opened the first Firehouse Subs in Jacksonville on 10 October. Chris was the creative force behind the look of the restaurants, with their fire station decor, firefighting memorabilia and a hand painted mural in every location, and he kept the company's history as its unofficial archivist. Over 27 years the brothers grew the chain to more than 1,200 restaurants and over $1 billion in yearly system sales. In 2021 they sold it to Restaurant Brands International, the owner of Burger King, in a deal reported at $1 billion.
In 2005 he co-founded the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which has awarded grants to about 7,700 departments in the United States and Canada. His family said he regarded it as his most meaningful achievement. He lived for 30 years in St. Johns, Florida, with his wife of 43 years, Kirsten, and was also a collector of historical artifacts and a keen student of history, science and the space program.
Sorensen died peacefully at his home on 11 October 2026, with his family at his side, five days before his 66th birthday. His family described him as a cancer survivor; no cause of death was given. A celebration of life was set for 23 October 2026 in St. Johns.
