Christiana Ruggeri (28 January 1969 to October 2026) was an Italian television journalist, author and animal welfare campaigner who spent more than a quarter of a century at Tg2, the news service of Rai 2. Viewers knew her as a newsreader and presenter of Tg2 Costume e Societa, while colleagues knew her as a foreign correspondent who reported from Haiti, Sierra Leone, Tibet, Mali and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From May 2025 she led Tg2's science and multimedia desk as caporedattrice (managing editor).

Ruggeri was born in Rome. Her family came from Arta Terme in Friuli, in the Carnia mountains, where she still spent her summers, and she often told colleagues with pride that she was "friulana". After the liceo scientifico she graduated in modern literature from Sapienza University of Rome, specialising in the history of literary criticism. She began writing in her first year at university for Ariel, the journal of the Centro Studi Pirandelliani in Rome.

In the 1990s she worked for Roman radio and television stations including Radio Luna, Radio Roma, Radio Radio and Teleroma 56, and wrote for L'Opinione delle liberta, Momento Sera and the Rome newsroom of Il Giornale. She joined Tg2 in 2000, first on the Costume e Societa desk and then, from 2005, on the foreign desk. That same year she made her debut as a presenter with the Tg2 Mistra segment, and she went on to front Tg2 Costume e Societa for four seasons as well as weekend editions of the news. According to her Tg2 colleagues, the first great tragedy she covered as a correspondent was the Haiti earthquake. Her reports on social and environmental issues earned several journalism prizes.

Her journeys fed into books. Her first novel, La lista di carbone (Mursia, 2008), set around the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, reached the final five of the Premio Bancarella and won the Premio Citta di Gaeta for a first work and the Premio Com&Te 2008. Giunti reissued it in a revised edition in 2016. Dall'Inferno si ritorna (Giunti, 2015) told the true story of a five year old girl who survived the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and won first prize for fiction at the Premio letterario Casentino in 2016. I dannati (2017) was a novel-reportage about the Penitenciaria General de Venezuela at San Juan de los Morros.

Later she wrote for young readers: Greta e il pianeta da salvare (2019), inspired by Greta Thunberg; Green Girls (Giunti, 2021), 32 true stories of young women defending the planet; Animali straordinari (Giunti, 2022), 33 true animal stories; and Jane Goodall. Io e gli scimpanze (Editoriale Scienza, 2025), which won the Premio Asimov Junior, chosen by middle school students, in May 2026. In February 2026 Giorgio Nada Editore published her novelised biography Ferdinand Porsche. Un genio capace di sognare. She regularly visited Italian schools to present her books. In 2022 she received the Stand Out Woman Award for journalism at the Sala della Regina of the Chamber of Deputies, and in January 2026 the Premio Storie di Donne from the Associazione Occhio dell'Arte.

Away from the newsroom Ruggeri was a committed animal welfare activist. For twenty years she founded and chaired the non-profit Il Rifugio delle Code Felici, which fought stray animal abandonment, and she was vice president of Greenaccord, an association of environmental journalists. On social media she described herself as a "proud mom", vegetarian and "always on the side of children and animals". She had a daughter, Grace.

Her last appearance in the Tg2 studio was a segment on the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake, for which she had also made a Tg2 Dossier episode. Her death at the age of 57 was announced on 18 October 2026; the cause was not made public. Rai expressed "profound condolences", praising reports that "told topics of great relevance with sensitivity and competence", and the Unirai Figec union sent its sympathy to her family and especially to her daughter. Days later, animal groups launched an appeal to find a single home for Zeus and Bella, the two dogs she had rescued from a shelter, so that they would not be separated.
