Darrell Richard Wells was a Louisville investor and banker who co-founded Commonwealth Bank & Trust in 1992, served for 29 years on the board of Churchill Downs and spent nearly two decades helping to steer the American Printing House for the Blind. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family, in Louisville on 23 October 2026, aged 84.
Wells was born in Louisville on 9 July 1942 to F. Lee Wells and Rita Brady Wells. He attended Holy Trinity grade school, won a merit scholarship to St. Xavier High School and went on to Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics. He spent one semester at the University of Louisville law school before deciding to trade stocks instead.
His career had to wait. A member of the Air Force Reserves, he was called up in 1965 to serve in reconnaissance in Japan during the Vietnam War. After his honourable discharge he moved to Chicago, where he and his friend Ed Mason founded Midwest Investors, described by his family as the sixth hedge fund in the United States. In 1972 he married Margaret Ann Cowley, whom he had met on a blind date the previous autumn, and she persuaded him to return to Louisville. There he and Mason founded Security Trend Partners, and Wells moved into banking through investments in the Bank of Magnolia and the Shelby County Trust Bank. He also launched the Shelby Fund family of mutual funds.
In 1992 Wells was awarded the first bank charter issued in Jefferson County in 75 years and used it to create Commonwealth Bank & Trust, serving as chief executive of its holding company and later as vice chairman. The bank merged with Stock Yards Bank & Trust in 2022. He also acquired a stake in the life insurer Citizens Financial Corporation and, in the early 2000s, started businesses bringing healthcare providers to nursing home residents, now known as 360Care.
Horse racing was a lifelong love. Wells sat on the Churchill Downs board from 1985 to 2014 and was part of the Starlight Racing syndicate, whose horses National Treasure and Citizen Bull won the 2023 Preakness, the 2024 Pegasus World Cup and the 2025 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Legally blind himself, he served on the board of the American Printing House for the Blind from 2001 to 2020 and chaired its investment committee.
Wells was buried at Cave Hill Cemetery after a funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Church on 27 October 2026. He was survived by his wife, four children and ten grandchildren.
