Dzevad Prekazi, known in Turkey as Cevat Prekazi, was a Yugoslav footballer and coach whose attacking midfield play made him one of the most admired players of his generation in the Balkans and in Turkish football. Born on 18 August 1957 in Kosovska Mitrovica to Kosovo Albanian parents, he grew up identifying as Yugoslav and went on to represent the country at youth level before building a long club career that spanned Yugoslavia, the United States and Turkey.
He began at his hometown club Remont before being signed by Partizan in December 1974, where he developed into one of the league's most gifted midfielders. With Partizan he won three Yugoslav First League titles, in 1975-76, 1977-78 and 1982-83, and lifted the Mitropa Cup in 1977-78. In 1984 he moved to Hajduk Split, winning the Yugoslav Cup that season, before a brief spell in American indoor soccer with the Baltimore Blast.
Prekazi's name is most closely tied to Galatasaray, where he signed in 1985 and spent six and a half seasons, making 185 league appearances and scoring 40 goals. He was a key part of the side that won back to back Turkish championships in 1986-87 and 1987-88, and his time in Istanbul made him a lasting favourite with Galatasaray supporters, who continued to regard him as a club legend decades later. He closed out his playing days with Altay, Bakirkoyspor and finally Trudbenik back in Yugoslavia.
After retiring as a player, Prekazi moved into coaching, managing Zeleznik on two separate occasions and working in the youth academies of Sindjelic Beograd, OFK Beograd and his old club Partizan, passing on the experience of his playing career to younger generations.
News of Prekazi's death broke on 8 November 2026, with reports describing him as a Galatasaray legend. Full details of the circumstances of his death, including any illness or cause, have not yet been made public, and this page will be updated as confirmed information becomes available. Tributes began circulating among Galatasaray supporters and in Balkan football circles, remembering him as a skilful midfielder who had also been part of three Partizan championship sides and a Hajduk Split cup winner.
