Edward Oratowski was a Polish footballer who spent ten seasons with Stal Mielec during the most successful period in the club's history, winning the Polish championship in 1976 and scoring one of its best remembered goals, against Hamburger SV in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. He later served the club as team manager. He died on 15 October 2026, aged 78.
He was born on 5 March 1948 in Tarnów, in southern Poland, and came through the youth teams of his home club, Unia Tarnów, before playing for its senior side until 1973. That year he was signed by Stal Mielec, who had just become champions of Poland.
At Mielec he became a regular in the first team after his first season, playing as a defensive midfielder and centre back. According to the club he made 226 top-flight appearances and scored 16 league goals for Stal, and 266 appearances in all competitions, including 14 in European cups. With Stal he won the league title in 1976, finished runner-up in 1975 and took third place in 1974, 1979 and 1982, and he captained the side. His goal in Hamburg in the 1975 to 1976 UEFA Cup quarter-final earned Stal a 1 to 1 draw away from home, and the club says it has a permanent place in the history of football in Mielec. As captain he also led Stal out for its last European match, against the Belgian club Lokeren.
After leaving Mielec he continued playing in the United States from 1984 to 1988, for the Polish-American clubs Wisła Chicago and the Polish-American Eagles of New York. On returning to Poland he went back to Stal and worked as team manager, including from 1993 to 1997. He was awarded the Silver Badge of the Polish Football Association (PZPN) for his work in the game.
Tomasz Leyko, deputy mayor of Mielec and author of a history of the club, said Oratowski was so devoted to Stal that he lent his own money to help rescue it, and was never repaid by a foreign sponsor.
Stal Mielec announced his death on 15 October 2026, describing him as an outstanding player of the club. The place and cause of death were not made public. His funeral Mass was set for 20 October 2026 in the chapel of the municipal cemetery in Tarnów-Mościce.

In their own words
“Był tak oddany klubowi, że pożyczył własne pieniądze na ratowanie klubu, ale nie doczekał się zwrotu od zagranicznego sponsora.”
Tomasz Leyko, deputy mayor of Mielec and author of the club history Biało-Niebieska, to mielec.pl, 16 October 2026 (He was so devoted to the club that he lent his own money to rescue it, but was never repaid by the foreign sponsor.)

Imagine giving everything and the sponsor just walks.
