Émerson da Silva Leal, known in football simply as Émerson, was a Brazilian defensive midfielder who came through the youth system of Grêmio and was part of the squad that won the Copa do Brasil in 2001. A heart condition found in 2004 took him out of the professional game for three years, and he later played on for a string of clubs in Rio Grande do Sul and beyond. He died on 27 October 2026 in Esteio, his home town, aged 46, a week after suffering a heart attack during an amateur match with friends.

He was born in Esteio, in the Porto Alegre metropolitan area, on 3 July 1980. He joined the Grêmio youth teams as a teenager and was promoted to the first team in 1999. A right footed volante, the Brazilian term for a holding midfielder, he played 108 matches for the Porto Alegre club and scored five goals, and he was part of the group that lifted the Copa do Brasil in 2001. He also played in the Copa Libertadores for the club.

In 2004 he went on loan to Sport Recife. When he returned to Grêmio in November of that year, routine tests by the club's medical department detected a cardiac abnormality and he was withdrawn from training and matches as a precaution. The episode became a point of dispute with the club. He did not play professionally again until 2007, when he was cleared by doctors, and he resumed his career at Juventude in Caxias do Sul.

Over the following years he played for Novo Hamburgo in several spells, Ulbra, Madureira in Rio de Janeiro, América of Natal, Canoas, Aimoré and Novo Horizonte, before retiring from professional football. He remained a keen player and took part regularly in amateur matches with friends.

On 17 October 2026 he felt chest pains after a game and lay down in the changing room for about fifteen minutes, thinking it was a problem with his blood pressure. On 20 October, about twenty minutes into another amateur match, he collapsed. A doctor who was playing gave him first aid and heart massage until an ambulance arrived. He was taken to the Hospital São Camilo in Esteio and kept in intensive care in a serious condition. He died there on the morning of 27 October 2026 from complications of the heart attack. He had two children.

Grêmio supporters and Brazilian sports media remembered him as one of the young players of the 2001 Copa do Brasil winning team, whose career had been shaped by the heart condition that was first found when he was 24.
