Frank Goode was an Australian rules footballer who played 73 Victorian Football League games for North Melbourne between 1961 and 1967 and twice led the club's goalkicking as a stand-in full-forward. He later coached in the Victorian Football Association, served Footscray as an assistant coach and spent many years caring for North Melbourne's former players. He died on 19 October 2026, aged 86.

Born on 19 December 1939, Goode came to North Melbourne from Moe and Heyfield in Victoria's Gippsland region. His association with the club began in 1958, when he played a single game with the Under 19s. In 1961 he joined the senior list in the middle of the season and made his debut in the final round, against St Kilda at Junction Oval, becoming North Melbourne player number 537.

For several seasons he was a useful utility who could be moved around the ground. His chance to make a name came when the club's star full-forward, John Dugdale, was injured in the mid-1960s. Goode took over the role and made it his own, topping North Melbourne's goalkicking in 1965 with 38 goals and again in 1966 with 49. Injury then caught up with him. He needed surgery early in 1967, was hurt again in 1968 and, when a second operation did not succeed, his playing days ended. He retired at 28 with 107 goals from his 73 games, and club and football historians record that he left to travel overseas.

Coaching kept him in the game. He took charge of North Melbourne's Under 19s and then coached Sandringham in the VFA in 1971 and 1972. He later joined Footscray as an assistant coach, and in 1981 he stepped in as senior coach for one match in place of Royce Hart, a game against Melbourne that Footscray lost. He also sat on the AFL Tribunal for five years.

His longest contribution came off the field. In 2007 Goode was appointed president of the North Melbourne Past Players and Officials Association and, at the same time, joined the board of the AFL's combined past players and officials association. The club described him as the conduit for many former North Melbourne players who turned to that body for financial or health support. In 2022 North Melbourne made him a life member, alongside former president James Brayshaw and long serving high performance manager Jona Segal.

North Melbourne announced his death on 19 October 2026, saying he had died that Monday aged 86. The cause of death was not made public. The club's AFLW players were to wear black armbands in his honour in their next match, against Adelaide in Hobart.

Never heard of Frank Goode until an Aussie rules YouTube deep dive a few years back, some old footage of him full-forward for North Melbourne in 66. 49 goals that season. Strange to feel something for a stranger from the other side of the world but there it is.

He became North Melbourne player number 537. Standing 183 centimetres and weighing 83 kilograms, he was used at first as a versatile utility.

His best football came in the second half of his career. When the club's champion full-forward John Dugdale was injured in the mid-1960s, Goode was moved to the goal square and seized the opportunity. He was North Melbourne's leading goalkicker in 1965 with 38 goals and again in 1966 with 49.

Injury cut his career short. He had surgery early in 1967, played his last senior game in round 5 that season, against Fitzroy on 13 May 1967, and was injured again in 1968. When a second operation failed, he gave the game away at 28. He finished with 73 games and 107 goals for North Melbourne. Club and football history sources also note that he retired in order to travel overseas.

Goode then turned to coaching. He coached North Melbourne's Under 19s and was senior coach of Sandringham in the Victorian Football Association in 1971 and 1972. He later became an assistant coach at Footscray, and in 1981 he took charge of the senior team for one match in place of Royce Hart, a loss to Melbourne. That single game gave him a place on the list of VFL senior coaches. He also served for five years on the AFL Tribunal.
