My mother called me from Virginia to tell me, she'd read it somewhere online even though she doesn't speak a word of Spanish, just knew I'd want to know. I used to watch Loco por ti on an old TV in my first apartment here in Santiago, trying to learn the language. Thought he was the funniest thing I'd seen in years.

Gabriel Antonio Prieto Escobar (2 February 1961 to 11 October 2026) was a Chilean actor and drama teacher whose career on stage and screen spanned more than four decades. He was one of the founders of Teatro Aparte, the independent company behind some of the longest-running hits in modern Chilean theatre, and a familiar face in Chilean telenovelas and sitcoms from Los títeres in 1984 to Hasta encontrarte in 2022. For about 28 years he also taught acting at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where his students included Blanca Lewin, María Elena Swett, Claudia Pérez, Stefan Kramer and Javiera Contador.
Prieto was born in Santiago and studied acting at the Universidad Católica drama school between 1983 and 1985. While still a second-year student he and a group of classmates were called by Jaime Vadell to work at Teatro La Feria, and that group became the core of Teatro Aparte. The company, founded in 1988 by Prieto with Rodrigo Bastidas, Magdalena Max-Neef and Elena Muñoz (with Álvaro Pacull among the early members), staged two works at Teatro El Conventillo before opening ¿Quién me escondió los zapatos negros? at Teatro Universidad Católica in 1991. The play, about a generation that lived through the 1973 coup as children, ran for four years without a break and toured abroad. It was followed by De uno a diez, ¿cuánto me quieres? in 1995, another long-running comedy about love and life as a couple, and later by Hijos de su madre and Consuegros. Prieto liked to say that the company was self-managed and paid for its own productions, and that keeping the same four founding members together for decades was unique in Chilean theatre.
On television he made his debut in 1984 in the Canal 13 telenovela Los títeres, playing Elías Barros, the son of Gloria Münchmeyer's character. He went on to supporting roles in Loca piel (1996), Santiago City (1997), Brujas (2005), Dama y obrero (2012), Volver a amar (2014), Te doy la vida (2016), 100 días para enamorarse (2019 to 2021) and Hasta encontrarte (2022). He was part of the main cast of the sitcoms Loco por ti (2004) and Mis años grossos (2009), and appeared as a guest in La Nany, Casado con hijos, Los Galindo and many other series. He played President Ramón Barros Luco in the historical miniseries Héroes (2007) and Rafael Orrego in Algo habrán hecho por la historia de Chile (2010), and in 2004 he was a panelist on Canal 13's Acoso textual: El otro sexo. In film he appeared in Punto rojo (1996), Lokas (2008), Un loco matrimonio en cuarentena (2021) and Consuegros (2022), the Teatro Aparte comedy adapted for the screen by Rodrigo Bastidas.
In September 2022, shortly after the premiere of Consuegros, Prieto contracted COVID-19. His illness was worsened by pre-existing diabetes and led to multiple organ failure. He was treated in intensive care at the Hospital Dr. Luis Tisné in Peñalolén and spent weeks in an induced coma; he later said he remembered nothing from the moment a neighbour left him at the hospital until about a month and a half later. After he was discharged in 2023 he shared his long rehabilitation publicly on social media, and he said he had come close to dying three times. In January 2025 he returned to the stage in the play La Nona, and that year he also appeared in the Prime Video series Sin frenos. ChileActores later described him as a pandemic survivor who shared a testimony of life, love, resilience and gratitude.
Prieto was married to the actress Andrea Zuckermann Echagüe, and they had a son, the filmmaker Vicente Prieto. His closest friends, including Magdalena Max-Neef, Rodrigo Bastidas, Elena Muñoz and Josefina Velasco, were often described as his chosen family.
On Friday 9 October 2026 he gave what became his last interview, to the YouTube programme Reyes del Drama, speaking about his eagerness to return to the stage and to television sets. Two days later, on Sunday 11 October 2026, he died in Santiago at the age of 65. His friend Magdalena Max-Neef said he had suffered a heart attack in the building where he had moved about six weeks earlier, after going down to the reception to collect some medicine. The death was announced by the Corporación de Actores y Actrices de Chile (ChileActores), and Culture Minister Francisco Undurraga called him an actor of outstanding career and a teacher of many generations of artists. His wake was held at Teatro San Ginés in Providencia on 12 and 13 October, followed by a responso (prayer service) at noon on 13 October.
