Gabriele Sabatini was a footballer and coach from La Spezia whose talent took him to the youth ranks of AC Milan and to the Italian Under 16 team alongside Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta, and whose decency made him one of the best loved figures in amateur football across Liguria and Tuscany. He died in the night between 4 and 5 October 2026, after a long illness, at the age of 50.

He was born in La Spezia on 22 March 1976. He took his first steps in football in the youth set up of Spezia, the club of his home city, and at 14 he moved into the Milan academy, where he rose to the Primavera side. Corriere della Sera and La Nazione both describe him as a playmaker with good feet: elegant, technically gifted and blessed with rare vision. He was called up to Italy's Under 15 and Under 16 selections, playing in a generation that, according to La Nazione, also included Nesta, Totti, Simone Inzaghi and Domenico Morfeo. Wikipedia records three appearances for Italy Under 16 in 1991.

A serious ankle injury changed the course of his career and closed the door to the biggest stages. He kept playing all the same. Through the second half of the 1990s and the early 2000s he played for clubs including Castelnuovo Garfagnana, Barberino, Pisa, Viterbese, Tempio, Cuneo, Bergamasca, Canavese and Valle d'Aosta. After a spell in amateur football in Piedmont he came home to the Spezia area, playing for Fo.Ce. Vara, Magra Azzurri and above all Sarzanese, where he spent six seasons as a leading figure and captain. Local papers still remember 5 October 2008, the day his Sarzanese beat Spezia on Spezia's own ground.

When he stopped playing he moved to the bench, and it was as a coach that he became best known. He won the Promozione championship with Magra Azzurri and went on to coach Ligorna in Genoa, Colli di Luni, Tarros Sarzanese, Pontremolese in the Tuscan Eccellenza and youth teams in Sarzana. On 5 June 2017 Fezzanese appointed him head coach. In his first season the club won the Ligurian Eccellenza title, breaking the league record for goals scored, and went straight back up to Serie D. The following season he kept Fezzanese in Serie D without needing the relegation play outs, and he stayed in charge through the 2019 to 2020 season, which was cut short by the pandemic. The club and Sabatini parted by mutual consent in June 2020, with Fezzanese calling him "one of us forever".

His last team was Santerenzina, the club of San Terenzo in the comune of Lerici, where he lived with his family. He led them to promotion to the Ligurian Promozione and stayed for two seasons. In an interview published in May 2026 he explained that he was stepping away from the bench, saying it had become hard to balance coaching with his work and his family, that he had turned down other offers, and that he wanted to take at least a year off while continuing to follow the team as a fan. Away from football he worked as a sales agent.

Former players remember him as a coach who taught more than tactics. La Nazione wrote that he passed on rules and values for life as well as football fundamentals. Alessandro Cesarini, who played under him, called him a fantastic person, a friend, a sublime player and an example on and off the pitch, and said Sabatini taught him how a real captain behaves.

In the last weeks of his life his illness forced him to stop, and he was eventually admitted to hospital in Pisa, according to Corriere della Sera. The nature of his illness has not been made public. News of his death on 5 October 2026 brought tributes from Spezia Calcio, Fezzanese, Santerenzina, Ligorna, Pontremolese and many other clubs. He is survived by his wife, Francesca Rollini, their two children and his parents. His funeral is set for Thursday 8 October 2026 at 11:30 in the Cathedral of Cristo Re in La Spezia.
