I remember my dad reading out the 44 million dollar figure from the newspaper in 2012 and just shaking his head. Wild that this is how it ends, a motorcycle crash in Austria at 68.

Gerhard Gribkowsky was a German bank executive who sat on the board of Bayerische Landesbank (BayernLB) from 2003 to 2008 and later became internationally known for his role in the sale of the bank's Formula One shares. A Munich court sentenced him in 2012 to eight and a half years in prison for taking bribes, breach of trust and tax evasion. He died on 4 October 2026 in a motorcycle crash near Schwarzau im Gebirge in Lower Austria. He was 68.
Born in Hamburg on 16 April 1958, he trained at Siemens, studied law at the University of Freiburg and took a doctorate in 1988. He worked at Deutsche Bank until 2002, including as a regional managing director for Bavaria, before joining BayernLB's board as risk chief. In that post he handled the bank's large Formula One holding, which it had taken as security after the Kirch media group's collapse, and in 2005-2006 steered the sale of those shares to the CVC-backed Alpha Prema vehicle supported by Bernie Ecclestone. BayernLB received about 837 million dollars for its stake.
Between 2006 and 2007 about 44 million dollars flowed to Gribkowsky's Austrian consultancy under advisory contracts linked to the deal. He disclosed a related private foundation to prosecutors in late 2010 after press inquiries. Arrested in January 2011, he was convicted by the Landgericht Munchen I on 27 June 2012. The judgment became final in 2013. He was released early in March 2016 after serving roughly two thirds of the sentence, having worked as a day-release employee for the Austrian builder Strabag while still imprisoned. He later served as a volunteer church assistant in Munich-Neuhausen.
On 4 October 2026 he was riding on Bundesstrasse 27 in the Hollental toward Reichenau when his motorcycle left the road, struck a drain cover and threw him several metres. Passers-by gave first aid; he died at the scene. Austrian police first reported the crash without naming him; Bild and other outlets identified him days later. His former lawyer told Bild he had returned to ordinary life after prison and called the accident tragic for him and his family.

In their own words
“He had found his way back into ordinary civic life after his conviction and the sentence he served. That this tragic accident has now happened is very sad for him and his family.”
Former counsel, quoted by Bild, October 2026 (English rendering of German press)

Same, my uncle followed that trial closely. Sad way to go either way.
