Saw this on L'Unione Sarda just now. Didn't know the name before today but Nuoro's choral tradition clearly owes him a lot. Thinking of his family tonight.

Gioacchino Scrugli was a Sardinian singer, choral conductor and arranger who spent more than half a century at the heart of the musical life of Nuoro. A founding member of the Coro Barbagia in 1966, he directed the choir for 37 years, from 1974 to 2011. He died in Nuoro on the morning of 8 October 2026, aged about 89.
Born in 1937, Scrugli began singing as a young man, studying with the Nuoro pianist Maria Rosaria Denti Sodo alongside the soprano Antonietta Chironi. In the late 1950s he sang in the polyphonic choir of Antonio Pintus, and in 1958 he joined Nuoro's civic band under Pintus, playing flugelhorn and later baritone saxophone. In 1961 he was among the founders and soloists of the Corale polifonica Santa Maria della Neve, a mixed choir of sacred, operatic and traditional music, and he also sang with the cathedral choir of Don Sergio Piras.
He was a versatile artist. Beginning as a tenor and maturing into a baritone, he sang operatic arias in concert from the early 1960s. He acted with a local theatre company, painted, composed, and in 1965 appeared alongside Ugo Tognazzi in Luigi Zampa's film Una questione d'onore.
In 1966 he was one of fourteen Nuoresi who founded the Coro Barbagia under Banneddu Ruiu, recording with them the RCA Italiana album Sardegna canta e prega. He took over as director and arranger in 1974. Under his leadership the choir broadened its repertoire and its ranks, released further volumes of Sardegna canta e prega in 1990, 1998 and 2000, and in 1988 won first prize at the first regional review of traditional Sardinian choirs, Città di Ozieri. His solo voice became linked with songs such as Adios Nugoro amada, Deus ti salvet Maria and Badde lontana. In 1994 the Regional Festival of Sardinian Folklore named him a Maestro del folklore.
In a January 2026 profile, Cronache Nuoresi described him as the many-sided soul of Nuoro singing, between opera and tradition.
L'Unione Sarda reported his death on 8 October 2026, calling him a historic figure of Nuoro's choral singing whose passing left a deep void in Sardinian choral music. No cause of death was made public.
