Gitta Lindemann was a German journalist, cultural editor and poet who led the culture department of the public broadcaster NDR in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for about a decade after German reunification. Outside northern Germany she was often seen as the wife of the East German children's author Werner Lindemann and the mother of Rammstein singer Till Lindemann, but colleagues remembered her above all as a curious, witty and open minded woman in her own right.

Brigitte Hildegard Lindemann, known to everyone as Gitta, was born in Dresden on 11 April 1939. Her love of literature was encouraged by her stepfather, a teacher, who would defend her when chores called: "She is reading. Please let her read." She went on to study journalism in Leipzig.

She married the writer Werner Lindemann, and the couple had two children, Till and his younger sister Saskia. In 1968 the family moved north to Drispeth near Schwerin, and she commuted with the children while working for the Radio of the GDR in Neubrandenburg. Their circle included the writers Christa and Gerhard Wolf, Helga Schubert, Daniela Dahn and Joochen Laabs, and she later said those conversations had been unlike anything she experienced again.

Reunification upended the family's life. The house they had restored for years was returned to its prewar owners, and Werner Lindemann's books were no longer published. He died in 1993, the year she became head of culture at NDR in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. There she founded the radio programme Literatur-Café, which introduced current authors, and the Sunday evening culture show Kunstkaten. She retired in 2002.

She had always written, but she published under her own name only late in life. Her memoir Meine Fensterplätze appeared in 2023 and included a chapter she called a declaration of love to her son. In spring 2026, shortly before her 87th birthday, she presented her poetry collection Lautlos at the Leipzig Book Fair.

Gitta Lindemann died at her home in northwestern Mecklenburg on Saturday 24 October 2026, aged 87. Her family confirmed her death to NDR; no cause was given. Weeks earlier she had been too ill to attend an event in Rostock marking the centenary of her late husband's birth, and Till Lindemann stayed with her instead.

I don't really know her work, only came across this because of Till, but 87 years and she kept writing right to the end. That's something. Sorry for his loss.

The area was home to many writers, including Christa and Gerhard Wolf, Helga Schubert, Daniela Dahn and Joochen Laabs, and she described the conversations of that time as inspiring and unrepeatable.

After reunification she became head of the culture department of NDR in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a post she took up in 1993. She created the programme Literatur-Café, presenting contemporary authors, and the Sunday evening programme Kunstkaten, which explored cultural topics from the region. She retired in 2002.

In retirement she remained active as a writer. Her memoir Meine Fensterplätze (Okapi-Verlag, 2023) drew on fragments she had kept for decades, and her poetry collection Lautlos (Edition Schwarzer Balken, 2026) was presented at the Leipzig Book Fair in spring 2026. With Werner Lindemann she had earlier published the books Ich freu mich auf den nächsten Tag (1977) and Petermännchens Ausguck (1990).
