Giuseppe Moschioni was an Italian footballer, a goalkeeper who was in goal for Foggia when the club won promotion to Serie A for the first time in 1964 and who kept goal in its first three seasons in the top flight. He also earned a small place in the history of Italian football as the first goalkeeper to be replaced by a substitute in a Serie A match. He died in Brescia on the evening of 14 October 2026, aged 90.

He was born in Cividale del Friuli on 3 June 1936. He began his career with Seregno in the Quarta Serie, winning regional and interregional titles with the club, and in 1959 he was part of the Italy team that won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Lebanon. Scouts from Brescia had noticed him, and he joined the club in 1960, sharing the goalkeeping duties with Brotto over the following seasons.

In 1963 he moved to Foggia, where the president Domenico Rosa Rosa and the coach Oronzo Pugliese were building a remarkable side. In the 1963 to 1964 Serie B season Moschioni played all 38 matches and conceded only 27 goals, and Foggia went 24 games unbeaten on the way to their first promotion to Serie A. He made his top flight debut against Fiorentina in Florence on 13 September 1964, and Foggia finished eighth in their first Serie A season. On 31 January 1965 his late saves, including one from Mario Corso, helped Foggia beat Helenio Herrera's Grande Inter 3 to 2 at the Zaccheria, the same season Inter won the league, the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.

On 5 September 1965, in the opening match of the Serie A season against Juventus in Turin, Moschioni was hurt in a collision with the Juventus forward Traspedini and was replaced by the reserve goalkeeper Gastone Ballarini. It was the first time a substitute goalkeeper had been used in a Serie A match. He stayed with Foggia until 1969, making 159 appearances over six seasons, three of them in Serie A, and then played briefly for Pro Patria before ending his career with Como in 1970.

After football he settled in Brescia, where he was known as Pino, while in Foggia he was always Beppe. In June 2026 Brescia and Foggia, two of his former clubs, marked his 90th birthday. His death was reported by l'Attacco, Mitico Magazine, FoggiaToday and other outlets on 15 October 2026, and the cause was not made public. In Foggia he was remembered as the goalkeeper of the club's first Serie A, one of the faces of a golden era.

In their own words

“A Foggia lo chiamavano Beppe, a Brescia Pino ed era ben voluto da tutti.”

Mitico Magazine (Bruno Mazzi), 15 October 2026 (In Foggia they called him Beppe, in Brescia Pino, and he was well liked by everyone.)

“Per i tifosi, Giuseppe Moschioni non sarà soltanto il portiere della prima Serie A: resterà uno dei volti simbolo di un'epoca irripetibile.”

l'Attacco (Pino Autunno), 15 October 2026 (For the fans, Giuseppe Moschioni will not only be the goalkeeper of the first Serie A: he will remain one of the faces of an unrepeatable era.)

ok so I don't really follow football, soccer whatever, but I fell down a wikipedia hole last year about the 1965 Grande Inter game and somehow ended up reading about this goalkeeper, Moschioni, who was in goal for Foggia that day. I was making dinner, pasta actually, kind of funny in hindsight, and my phone just buzzed with the news he'd died at 90. ninety. I don't know why that got me so much, maybe because I'd just been thinking about that match a few weeks ago. anyway. he played all 38 games the season they got promoted and only let in 27 goals, I looked that up again just now to make sure I had it right. edit: 1963 to 1964 season, not 65, I keep mixing up the years

He made two appearances for the national under-21 side that year. He joined Brescia in 1960 and over the next seasons alternated in goal with the first choice keeper Brotto, making 57 league appearances.

In 1963 he moved to Foggia in Serie B. The club, led by the president Domenico Rosa Rosa and the coach Oronzo Pugliese, had one of the most memorable seasons in its history in 1963 to 1964. Moschioni played all 38 league matches and conceded only 27 goals, and Foggia went unbeaten for 24 games, from 3 November 1963 to 3 May 1964, to win promotion to Serie A for the first time.

He made his Serie A debut on 13 September 1964 in Florence, in a 3 to 1 defeat by Fiorentina, and remained first choice as Foggia spent three consecutive seasons in the top division, finishing eighth in the first. On 31 January 1965 Foggia beat Helenio Herrera's Inter 3 to 2 at the Stadio Zaccheria. Moschioni was praised for his saves in the closing minutes, including one from Mario Corso, and the victory became one of the most celebrated in the club's history.

On 5 September 1965, in the opening match of the Serie A season against Juventus at the Stadio Comunale in Turin, he was injured in a collision with the Juventus forward Traspedini in the 16th minute of the second half and replaced by the reserve goalkeeper Gastone Ballarini. It was the first time a substitute goalkeeper had been used in a Serie A match. In January 1967 he was again replaced by Ballarini, at San Siro against Inter, after being struck on the head by a bottle thrown from the crowd. Local reports also recalled that he played without gloves.

Moschioni stayed with Foggia until 1969, making 159 appearances in six seasons, three in Serie A and three in Serie B. He then played a few matches for Pro Patria and ended his career with Como in the 1969 to 1970 season, when the club avoided relegation on the last day.
