Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe was a Nigerian entrepreneur, educationist and politician best known as the founder of Gregory University, Uturu, a private university he built in his ancestral community in Isuikwuato, Abia State. A self-made businessman who sold bean cakes on the streets of Enugu as a boy, he went on to lead Skill "G" Nigeria Limited, a company that supplied and installed science, engineering and technical training equipment in schools and universities across the country, and he was the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for governor of Abia State in 2023. He died on Sunday, 18 October 2026, after a prolonged illness.

Ibe was born in Kaduna on 10 December 1963 to parents from Uturu, Cyril Elesiem Ibe, a tailor who joined the Nigeria Police to help set up its tailoring department, and Margaret Nneoma Ibe, a seamstress and trader. He was the first son. He was a small child during the Nigerian Civil War, and in later interviews he described having "no childhood". After the war the family rebuilt their lives in Enugu, where he fried and sold akara (bean cakes) and bread, polished police officers' shoes, fetched water and minded neighbours' babies, before moving with his parents to the police barracks in Owerri. He became a scout troop leader and picked up practical trades along the way, including tailoring, surveying, electrical work, carpentry, masonry, plumbing and aluminium fitting.

His education was, in his own words, "self-made". He attended a commercial school in Owerri, then secondary school at Ihube in present-day Imo State, which his campaign said he attended from 1978 to 1983. When his school results were withheld he sat the General Certificate of Education at Ordinary and Advanced level, studied at the School of Accountancy and Management Studies in Aba and took British accountancy examinations. Years later, while already a business executive, he earned a BSc in Marketing at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (1995 to 1999), followed by a master's degree (2003) and a PhD in Management (2006) from California Coast University in Santa Ana, California.

From December 1985 he worked as an accountant trainee and then materials accountant with an Israeli-owned construction firm, working on projects that included Abia State University, the Imo Airport and buildings in Abuja. He later joined the Israeli group Dizengoff in Lagos in May 1992, rising to general manager and opening branches in Ghana and the Gambia, and worked on the Victoria Garden City development. Through Skill "G" Nigeria Limited, which he led as managing director with Israeli partners, he took on World Bank, UNDP and TETFund linked projects to equip university laboratories, train technologists and lecturers, and develop vocational training modules for skills centres across Nigeria's local government areas. He also taught entrepreneurship at Abia State University and was styled a professor of entrepreneurial studies.

Gregory University opened in 2012 after receiving its licence from the National Universities Commission. Ibe said he built it in his home community to create jobs and to give rural young people practical, entrepreneurial skills rather than prepare them only for employment, and he said he founded it in memory of his father, who could not continue his schooling beyond primary level for lack of money. The university added engineering and medical programmes, and his Gregory Ibe Scholarship Scheme was reported in 2020 to have supported more than 250 students. During the COVID-19 pandemic he donated ambulances, food and medical supplies in Abia State. He also founded Innov8 Hub in Abuja, an innovation and start-up centre. He said he was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.

A long-time member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ibe sought its governorship ticket on the strength of the Abia Charter of Equity, which he argued should give Abia North its turn. He left the party on 30 March 2022, joined APGA and won its primary on 29 May 2022. His candidacy was challenged in court by rival aspirants, annulled by the Federal High Court in December 2022 and restored by the Supreme Court in March 2023. In the election of 18 March 2023, won by Alex Otti of the Labour Party, Ibe polled 18,119 votes. His party rejected the results, alleging irregularities.

Ibe married young, at 23. His first wife died, and he remarried. According to his family he is survived by six children and seven grandchildren. His father, the traditional ruler of Amaokwe Achara as Eze Cyril Ibe, Okwelube I, died at 100 in 2021, and his mother was buried at Amaokwe Achara on 1 May 2026; Ibe attended despite his illness. Health challenges had begun during the 2023 campaign, and he rarely appeared in public afterwards. His death was announced on 19 October 2026 by the royal family of Amaokwe Achara, which said that through Gregory University, Skill "G", Innov8 Hub and other initiatives he had "touched thousands of lives". Funeral arrangements were to be announced later.

Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe was born in Kaduna on 10 December 1963. His parents were natives of Uturu in what is now Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State. His father, Cyril Elesiem Ibe, was a tailor who left a shop to his wife and joined the Nigeria Police to help establish its tailoring department in Kaduna; he later became the traditional ruler of Amaokwe Achara as Eze Cyril Ibe, Okwelube I. His mother, Margaret Nneoma Ibe, was a seamstress and trader who had married his father in 1962. Ibe was the first son. In a 2021 interview with the Nigerian Tribune he said his name, Ikechukwu, means "God's power", and recalled family accounts that he cried for three months after his birth, which his parents had feared was a sign of ogbanje.

He was a small child when the Nigerian Civil War broke out, and he later said the conflict left him with "no childhood", recounting his mother's stories of hiding her children under a large tree while bombs fell. After the war the family moved to Enugu, where they lived in one room. He fried and sold akara (bean cakes) and bread at the Police College, polished officers' shoes, belts and berets, carried loads at motor parks, fetched water from kilometres away and minded neighbours' babies. His schooling was repeatedly disrupted, and he moved through several primary schools.

He was later sent to Uturu to work on his uncle's farm before rejoining his parents at the Owerri police barracks, where he became a scout troop leader. Along the way he learned trades that he used for the rest of his life, including tailoring, land surveying, electrical work, carpentry, welding, masonry, plumbing and aluminium fitting. He paid his own school fees by bidding to repair staff quarters and classrooms during the holidays.

Education

Ibe described his education as "self-made" and "disjointed". After primary school he attended a commercial school in Owerri (the City Institute of Commerce), where he learned typing, shorthand, bookkeeping and statistics, before returning to conventional secondary school at Ihube in present-day Imo State. After primary school he attended a commercial school in Owerri (the City Institute of Commerce), where he learned typing, shorthand, bookkeeping and statistics, before returning to conventional secondary school at Ihube in present-day Imo State. Biographies name the school as Boys' High School, Ihube, while a 2022 statement from his campaign said he attended Methodist High School, Ihube, from 1978 to 1983. When his West African examination results were seized, he obtained the General Certificate of Education at Ordinary and Advanced level.

He went on to the School of Accountancy and Management Studies in Aba, earned an Ordinary National Diploma and sat British accountancy examinations, including the Association of Accounting Technicians and ACCA Part II. While working as a senior manager at Dizengoff in Lagos he decided he was "half-educated", and he studied for a BSc in Marketing at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) from 1995 to 1999. He then studied at California Coast University in Santa Ana, California, from 2000, earning a master's degree in 2003 (described by his campaign as a master's in health care management) and a PhD in Management in 2006.

Business career

Ibe's working life began on 9 December 1985, when he started as an accountant trainee with an Israeli-owned construction company. Working in materials accounting alongside engineers, he was involved in building projects at Abia State University and the Imo Airport, and he was later transferred to Abuja as an area manager, working on the old Federal Secretariat and the Ministry…

Ibe's working life began on 9 December 1985, when he started as an accountant trainee with an Israeli-owned construction company. Working in materials accounting alongside engineers, he was involved in building projects at Abia State University and the Imo Airport, and he was later transferred to Abuja as an area manager, working on the old Federal Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. At 26 he started his own company in Port Harcourt and lost about 12 million naira when, he said, a partner took the money and the project.

On 14 May 1992 he joined the Israeli group Dizengoff in Lagos, rising from divisional coordinator to general manager and opening branches in Ghana and the Gambia. He then worked on the Victoria Garden City estate development near Lagos, where he said he helped bring in air conditioning and telephone lines. In the 1990s he took on World Bank projects to equip the laboratories of federal universities and to train staff to use the equipment.

His main vehicle was Skill "G" Nigeria Limited, which he led as managing director and chief executive alongside Israeli partners. The company, incorporated on 25 July 1991 according to its own history, supplied and installed science, engineering, technical and vocational training equipment and instructional materials for primary schools, secondary schools, polytechnics, colleges of education and universities, including TETFund-supported installations across dozens of universities, and trained thousands of teachers and technicians. Ibe also worked as a consultant with the UNDP and National Planning on a needs assessment of Nigeria's 774 local government areas, produced training modules for 42 skills for youth skills centres, and served as a consultant to several federal ministries during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he called his mentor. He later founded Innov8 Hub in Abuja, an innovation and start-up incubation centre.

Gregory University, Uturu

Ibe founded Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), in his home community of Amaokwe Achara, Uturu. He had planned to open in 2011, but the university received its National Universities Commission licence in February 2012 and admitted its first students later that year. Ibe founded Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), in his home community of Amaokwe Achara, Uturu. He had planned to open in 2011, but the university received its National Universities Commission licence in February 2012 and admitted its first students later that year. Its motto is "Knowledge for tomorrow". He said the idea came partly from his time teaching at nearby Abia State University, where he saw gaps he wanted to close, and partly from his father, who had been unable to continue his education beyond primary school.

He said he built the university "with more emphasis on entrepreneurship and skills development to encourage rural dwellers to become entrepreneurs rather than being employees", and that he used his own construction skills to cut building costs. The university added engineering in its second year and a College of Medicine in its third, and it signed exchange agreements with American institutions including Tuskegee University. In 2015 he told The Guardian that the university had 312 students and that he was "building a university and not a competitive business". By 2020 it employed about 500 staff.

Through the Gregory Ibe Scholarship Scheme he sponsored indigent but gifted students, with more than 250 beneficiaries reported by 2020. His parents were credited by the university and by Governor Alex Otti with motivating its founding. By 2026 his son Gregory Okechukwu Ibe Jnr. was serving as Chancellor of the university.

Politics

Ibe was active in politics for many years, and said he had stood by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for 16 years. He sought the PDP governorship ticket in Abia State, arguing under the Abia Charter of Equity that power should rotate to Abia North. He said he stepped aside in 2019 on the understanding that Abia North would get…

Ibe was active in politics for many years, and said he had stood by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for 16 years. He sought the PDP governorship ticket in Abia State, arguing under the Abia Charter of Equity that power should rotate to Abia North. He said he stepped aside in 2019 on the understanding that Abia North would get the ticket in 2023, and when that did not happen he left the PDP on 30 March 2022 and joined the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

On 29 May 2022 he won the APGA governorship primary in Umuahia with 283 delegate votes, ahead of Etigwe Uwa, Ijioma Nwokoro Ijioma and Chikwe Udensi. His running mate was Obinna Ichita, a member of the Abia State House of Assembly. The losing aspirants went to court. On 1 December 2022 a Federal High Court annulled the primary, and on 8 February 2023 the Court of Appeal dismissed APGA's appeal, but on 8 March 2023 the Supreme Court affirmed Ibe as the party's candidate, and a week later it struck out a further appeal by Ijioma.

In the governorship election held on 18 March 2023, Alex Otti of the Labour Party won with 175,467 votes. Ibe was credited with 18,119 votes, about 5 percent. The Abia APGA chairman, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, rejected the results, saying votes for Ibe had been "suppressed and not credited to him". Ibe remained a voice in Abia public life afterwards, including messages on Nigeria's Independence anniversary in October 2026, and he described himself as a member of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Presidential Advisory Council.

Personal life

Ibe married at 23. In a 2021 interview he said his first marriage ended in divorce and that his first wife later died; in 2015 he said simply that he had "lost my first wife". He remarried. Ibe married at 23. In a 2021 interview he said his first marriage ended in divorce and that his first wife later died; in 2015 he said simply that he had "lost my first wife". He remarried. His family said he is survived by six children and seven grandchildren, and he said in 2015 that two of his children were medical doctors in the United States. His son Gregory Okechukwu Ibe Jnr. became Chancellor of Gregory University.

He was the first son of a large family; his mother was survived by nine children, five sons and four daughters. His father, Eze Cyril Elesiem Ibe, Okwelube I of Amaokwe Achara, died at the age of 100 in 2021, and his mother, Ugoeze Margaret Nneoma Ibe, was buried at Amaokwe Achara on 1 May 2026, aged 81. He said he loved reggae and liked to sing, and that he kept in touch with childhood friends from Enugu and Owerri. He also spent time in the United States, where he said he ran a Gregory Foundation for the aged and less privileged.

Beliefs and views

Ibe's guiding motto came from his father: never let even your enemy's children go without education. "Do everything for your enemy to be educated because if not, you are living in a big mess," he told the Nigerian Tribune. He argued that Nigerian education should put skills and entrepreneurship at the heart of the curriculum, that science and technology should…

Ibe's guiding motto came from his father: never let even your enemy's children go without education. "Do everything for your enemy to be educated because if not, you are living in a big mess," he told the Nigerian Tribune. He argued that Nigerian education should put skills and entrepreneurship at the heart of the curriculum, that science and technology should take priority over saturated fields, and that the country should adopt an American-style financial aid model so that "no child is denied education because of lack of money". He also favoured longer tenures for university leaders and some private investment in public institutions.

He attributed his success to God and spoke of his public life as a divine assignment, describing his governorship bid as "divine". He was a strong advocate of zoning and rotation under the Abia Charter of Equity, and of Igbo unity, saying he had organised Igbo cultural and political gatherings. In his final public messages in October 2026 he praised Nigerians' self-help spirit, "anchored on the Igbo philosophy of Igwebuike", and urged them to use their votes in the 2027 elections to remove poor leaders.

Legacy and impact

Ibe's lasting monument is Gregory University, Uturu, which brought a university, jobs and a medical college to a rural community and which he said would take decades to break even. His family statement said that through the university, Skill "G" Ltd., Innov8 Hub and other initiatives "he touched thousands of lives, leaving an enduring legacy in education and community development".…

His family statement said that through the university, Skill "G" Ltd., Innov8 Hub and other initiatives "he touched thousands of lives, leaving an enduring legacy in education and community development". Scholarship beneficiaries described his support in personal terms; one told Daily Trust in 2020, "If not for Prof. Ibe, I will not be a graduate today."

Through Skill "G" he played a part in re-equipping science and technical laboratories in Nigerian schools, polytechnics and universities. Innov8 Hub described him on his death as the founder "whose vision and commitment to innovation laid the foundation" for the centre. In politics, his 2023 campaign was one of the most prominent attempts to press Abia North's claim under the Abia Charter of Equity.

Awards and honours

Ibe said he was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) by President Goodluck Jonathan on 29 September 2014, and he used the post-nominal OFR. He said he was named best performing engineer by the World Bank for a laboratory equipment project, although he was not an engineer by training. On 24…

On 24 November 2022 the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Ex-Student Leaders Association invested him as its patron during the university's convocation week.

Media and interviews

Ibe gave long interviews about his life and work, including "I established Gregory University to equip Nigerians with practical skills" (The Guardian, 2015), "As a baby, I wept for three months non-stop" (Nigerian Tribune, 2021), "My rag to riches story" (The Sun, 2022) and "My Quest to Serve Abia is Divine" (ThisDay, 2022). Ibe's campaign denied the claim in December 2022, setting out his schooling, his ESUT degree and his California Coast University qualifications, saying he had an NYSC exemption on age grounds and threatening legal action. No court finding against him on the certificates was reported. His candidacy was also the subject of prolonged litigation over the APGA primary, which the Supreme Court resolved in his favour in March 2023. In interviews he spoke of a 2019 zoning agreement within the Abia PDP that he said was broken.
