Heinz Hechenberger was an Austrian road racing cyclist who won the Austrian national road race championship in 1990, and who later turned his love of the bicycle into a career, founding the cycling holiday company SunBike. He rode for ARBÖ Salzburg and was a member of the Austrian national and Olympic squads.

He was born on 9 February 1963 in Radstadt, in the Salzburg region, and made his name as an amateur road racer in the 1980s. In 1986 he won the overall classification of the Csepel Cup, and in 1987 he took the overall title and a stage at the stage race in Aflenz, as well as a stage of the Tour of Martinique. That year he also finished eighth overall in the Tour of Styria.

In 1988 he won silver at the Austrian championship in the team time trial with his Salzburg teammates Ekkehard Dörschlag, Herbert Meneweger and Manfred Kornelson, and placed fifth overall in the Tour of Styria and ninth in the national time trial championship. After fourth place in the national road race in 1989, he won the title in 1990. In the same season he won a stage of the Tour of Algeria and finished third on the seventh stage of the Tour of Austria.

After his racing career Hechenberger stayed in cycling. In 1995 he joined the cycling travel business, and in 2004 he set up his own company, SunBike Radreisen und Events, based in Neumarkt am Wallersee, offering guided cycling holidays around the Salzburg lakes, the Salzkammergut and further afield. In 2017 he added an electric bike rental service on Mallorca. When the Austrian road championships came to Neumarkt am Wallersee in 2016, he was a guest of honour and congratulated the winners on the podium, 26 years after his own title.

Hechenberger died on 27 October 2026 at the age of 63, after a long and serious illness. The Salzburg state cycling federation, the Landesradsportverband Salzburg, paid tribute to a great sportsman and a valued person. His funeral Mass and the burial of his urn were set for 3 November 2026 at the parish church in Neumarkt am Wallersee, and his family asked for donations to the Austrian Cancer Aid in Salzburg in place of flowers.

Booked a week through SunBike with my wife back in 2014, riding around the Salzkammergut lakes with no idea the guy running the show had actually won the Austrian national title back in 1990. Found that out later and it made the whole trip make more sense somehow. Sorry to hear this.
