Never knew his name until this week's obituary. 84 years running one theatre. That's a kind of faith.

Horst Johanning was a German theatre director, actor, translator and theatre manager who ran the Contra-Kreis-Theater in Bonn, the city's oldest and largest private theatre, for more than four decades. The theatre announced on the evening of Tuesday 13 October 2026 that he had died at the age of 84. The exact date of his death was not published.
He was born in 1942 in Herzberg am Harz in Lower Saxony. He first studied philosophy and theatre studies in Göttingen and Berlin before moving to the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover to train for the stage. In 1966 he appeared for the first time as an actor on the stage of the Contra-Kreis in Bonn.
In 1980 he took over the running of the Contra-Kreis-Theater together with his partner, Katinka Hoffmann, as artistic director and managing director. Alongside that work he directed well over 200 productions at theatres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as plays for touring companies and television. He was known above all as a specialist in comedy, but he also directed serious work, including Peter Handke's Kaspar with the young Martin Schwab, later a leading actor of the Vienna Burgtheater. Stars who worked with him included Nicole Heesters, Charles Regnier, Sonja Ziemann, Hans-Jürgen Bäumler, Heide Keller, Horst Janson, Jochen Busse and Christian Wolff, and he gave an early chance to the young Til Schweiger.
Johanning was also active as a translator and in the wider theatre world. He was vice president of the Deutscher Bühnenverein, the national association of theatres and orchestras, and from 2001 to 2017 he was spokesman for its group of private theatres. He helped bring German theatre and orchestra culture onto the national register of intangible cultural heritage, and he taught acting students at the Alanus University in Alfter. In 2021 Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded him the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
After Katinka Hoffmann died in 2021 he led the theatre alone. Its programme of comedies, society plays and light crime stories regularly sold out, and when the Contra-Kreis celebrated its 75th birthday in spring 2026 he told the General-Anzeiger, quoting Brecht, that the real task of theatre is to entertain. The theatre said it would carry on with the season he had planned, with Jessica Hoffmann taking over as interim director.

In their own words
“Es gibt diesen Satz von Brecht: Die eigentliche Aufgabe des Theaters ist es, zu unterhalten. Auch wenn es um Mord und Totschlag geht.”
