Never heard of him before today but the bit about founding museum education programs for kids caught me, that's genuinely hard work that doesn't get credit. 82 is a full life though.

Ilario Luperini was an Italian art critic, art historian, teacher and school head who spent most of his life in Pisa and became one of the best-known figures in the city's cultural life. He helped found the education department of the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, led the Pisa State Institute of Art, now the Liceo Artistico Russoli, from 1983 to 2006, and was president of the Fondazione Teatro di Pisa from 1995 to 2008. He died suddenly at the age of 82, and his death was announced in Pisa on 30 October 2026.
He was born in Pietrasanta, in the province of Lucca, on 7 April 1944. After a classical secondary education he took a degree in letters at the University of Pisa, and from the start he was drawn to teaching art and making art history accessible. In 1976 he was among the founders, with Antonino Caleca and Lucia Tongiorgi, of the education section of the San Matteo museum, and for many years he advised the Tuscan heritage superintendencies on museum education.
From 1979 he ran art schools, and in 1983 he became head of the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Pisa. Over 23 years he made it a laboratory for contemporary languages, design and multimedia, and he told its story in his 2012 book L'arte e la scuola che non c'e. As a critic he wrote dozens of essays and catalogues on old masters and contemporary artists, and he curated exhibitions of Igor Mitoraj and Arnaldo Pomodoro for the Opera della Primaziale Pisana. In 1990 he was made an Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
He was also active in civic life, as a Pisa city councillor until 1994 and a councillor responsible for a portfolio in Cascina until 1996. He campaigned for the city's heritage through the association for the walls of Pisa, and only weeks before his death he founded the Gruppo Pisano dell'Arte with the architect Marco Sereni.
He was married to Maria Giulia Burresi, former director of the Pisa superintendency, and had two daughters, Marina and Linda. His body lay at the Pubblica Assistenza in Pisa before cremation at the city's suburban cemetery. La Nazione called him a guiding light of the city's culture.
