My sister and I stood in front of the Depot in 2022, that mirrored building just sitting there reflecting the whole park back at you. Had no idea who was behind it until today. 57 is no age.

Ina Klaassen was a Dutch arts administrator who led Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, one of the oldest and best known art museums in the Netherlands. She joined the museum as business director in 2013, became co-director in 2019 and took sole charge in 2022. She died on 11 October 2026, aged 57, after an illness.
Born in 1969, Klaassen studied audiovisual art at the Minerva art academy in Groningen and art and art policy at the University of Groningen. From 1998 to 2001 she was arts and culture policy adviser to the municipality of Stadskanaal, where former colleagues remembered her energy and her insistence that even street paving should be looked at with an artist's eye. She then moved to Rotterdam, first working for the city and from 2011 to 2013 serving as director of the Willem de Kooning Academy.
At Boijmans she started as business director. From 2019 she shared the directorship with Sjarel Ex, and after his departure in 2022 she became responsible for both the business and the artistic direction of the museum. Her years there were dominated by two huge projects. The first was the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the mirror clad building described by NRC as the first publicly accessible art storage facility in the world, which grew under her leadership into an international visitor attraction. The second was the renovation and renewal of the main museum building, closed since 2019 and due to reopen in 2030. She secured major private support for it, including a large pledge from the Droom en Daad foundation. In a 2020 interview with NRC she said she wanted the renewed museum to be more hospitable and inclusive and to reach young people and Rotterdammers of every background.
In May 2026 it was announced that Klaassen was seriously ill and had stepped down from her duties with immediate effect, with Sandra Kisters taking over as acting director. On 21 August 2026 the city of Rotterdam awarded her its city medal, De Rotterdammert, in a small ceremony, in recognition of her contribution to the cultural life of the city.
Klaassen died on Sunday 11 October 2026, aged 57. The museum announced her death on its website, remembering her passion, decisiveness, humour and deep love for art and for Rotterdam, and the chair of its supervisory board called her the museum's fourteenth director and said the board remembered her with great respect.
