Not an actress whose work I knew well, but I came across a clip of her Nina in The Seagull years ago on a theatre festival stream and the stillness she brought to it stayed with me. 68 is no age. Condolences to the Dailes company.

Indra Briķe was a Latvian stage and screen actress whose career of almost five decades was divided between two of the country's leading theatres: the Liepāja Theatre, where she worked from 1977 to 1992, and the Dailes Theatre in Riga, where she was a member of the company from 1993 until her death.
Born on 29 December 1957 in Durbe, in western Latvia, she attended Durbe secondary school and Liepāja Secondary School No. 1. While still young she played the lead role in the 1976 film Zobena ēnā (In the Shadow of the Sword). In 1977 she graduated from the Liepāja Theatre's second acting studio, taught by Antonija Apele and the director Oļģerts Kroders, and joined the theatre's company the same year.
At Liepāja she became Kroders' leading actress and is often described as his muse. She played many of the great female roles of world and Latvian drama, among them Sonya Marmeladova in Crime and Punishment, Spīdola in Rainis' Fire and Night, Nina Zarechnaya in The Seagull, Marguerite Gautier in The Lady of the Camellias and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. In the early 1990s she also appeared in productions at the New Riga Theatre.
At the Dailes Theatre she worked closely with director Mihails Gruzdovs, playing women consumed by destructive passion, including the title roles in Thérèse Raquin (1996) and Raudupiete (2003) and Queen Gertrude in Hamlet (2003). In later years she was celebrated for character roles such as the grandmother Nina Savelyeva in Bury Me Under the Baseboard and Peggy in Admirer No. 1, and she was still appearing in four productions in the 2026 season. On screen her best known role was Dārta in Dzīvīte (1989), which won her the Lielais Kristaps award for best actress.
Her honours included the title of Merited Artist of the Latvian SSR (1989), several Spēlmaņu nakts national theatre awards, the Lilita Bērziņa Prize, the Cross of Recognition (2008) and the first Oļģerts Kroders Prize (2014).
Briķe died on 9 October 2026, aged 68, after a serious illness. A farewell was arranged at the Liepāja Theatre on 20 October 2026.
