Jayden Oswin Adams was a South African professional footballer who rose from the Cloetesville suburb of Stellenbosch to start for Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and win the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns. He was found dead in Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town, on or about 11 July 2026, aged 25. The cause of death was not publicly disclosed. His representatives and guardian confirmed the death, family spokesperson Brendine Johnson asked for privacy, and Cape Town central police opened an inquest on 13 July.

Adams was born in Cape Town on 5 May 2001 to Candice and Juanito Adams and grew up in Cloetesville, a poor suburb of Stellenbosch. He came through the Stellenbosch FC academy and in August 2020 signed a long-term professional contract as the club's first academy graduate to do so. He made his senior debut later that month as a substitute in a 1-1 home draw with Chippa United on 28 August 2020. Over six seasons with Stellenbosch he made 109 Premiership appearances and scored seven league goals, winning the Carling Knockout Cup in 2023.

In January 2025 he joined Mamelodi Sundowns after interest from Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. In his first season he helped Sundowns win the South African Premiership. In May 2026 the club won the 2025-26 CAF Champions League. Across two seasons Adams made dozens of appearances for the Yellow Nation, including continental and Club World Cup fixtures, and scored memorable goals, among them his first for the club that circulated widely among supporters.

His international career began with South Africa B at the 2022 COSAFA Cup against Mozambique. He went on to earn 13 senior caps and score two goals for Bafana Bafana, both in March 2025 World Cup qualifying wins over Lesotho and Benin. He was named in South Africa's 2026 FIFA World Cup squad and featured in all three group-stage matches in Group A: starting against Mexico in Mexico City (2-0 loss on 11 June) and the Czech Republic (1-1 on 18 June), then coming on as a substitute in the 1-0 win over South Korea in Monterrey on 24 June, his final competitive appearance. He did not play in the round-of-32 defeat to Canada. FIFA later held moments of silence for him during World Cup quarter-finals on 11 July.

Adams stood 1.75 m and played primarily as a defensive midfielder, also capable on the wing. Coaches including Stellenbosch's Steve Barker and Sundowns' Miguel Cardoso praised his work rate and growth. After the stabbing death of close friend and former teammate Oshwin Andries in 2023, Adams dedicated a Sundowns medal to him. His grandmother Marianna Adams died on 17 June 2026, the day before South Africa's World Cup match against the Czech Republic.

He is survived by his parents Candice and Juanito Adams; his partner Aqueelah Adendorf and their daughter, then aged five; and his son Jude Sage, born in August 2024 to Jody Solomons. Tributes followed from SAFA, Bafana Bafana, Mamelodi Sundowns, PSL chair Dr Irvin Khoza, FIFA president Gianni Infantino, and coach Hugo Broos. Memorials were held in Cape Town and outside Chloorkop. ESPN and other outlets framed his story as a Cloetesville boy who defied childhood odds to make Stellenbosch and the nation proud on the World Cup stage.

25. That's the number that won't leave me, saw it in a headline about a World Cup he'd just played in. Hoping Aqueelah and his kids get some peace in the coming weeks.
