I don't really know this name, saw it on a wire update and just sat with it a minute. Seventy seven. Hope Burundi takes care of his family.

Jean-Jacques Nyenimigabo was a Burundian politician, sports educator and cultural organiser who served as Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports under President Pierre Nkurunziza from 2010 to 2015. Born on 25 May 1949 at Mubuga in Gitega Province, then part of Ruanda-Urundi, he trained in France and built a career bridging university physical education, Francophone sports diplomacy and national cultural policy. Colleagues remembered a discreet, jovial figure who kept friendships across political lines even as he served a CNDD-FDD government.
Before entering the cabinet he was dean of the Institute of Physical Education and Sport at the University of Burundi and the first head of the physical education department at the Kigali Institute of Education in Rwanda. In December 2008 he organised Burundi's first Peace Marathon, which drew about 3,000 athletes including Olympic champions Venuste Niyongabo and Marie-Jose Perec. In 2009 his French networks helped him become president of CONFEJES, the conference of youth and sports ministers of Francophone states and governments. When culture was added to his ministerial brief he sought advice from the cultural milieu he had long supported through Rumuri Culture at the university, backing festivals such as FESTICAB and the Pam Awards as well as the national artists' forum FNAAD.
Appointed minister on 30 August 2010, he was one of the longer-serving members of Nkurunziza's successive cabinets and later worked as a presidential adviser on missions. Iwacu's 2010 special issue on fifty people advancing the country called him the young minister of sports and culture. He liked swimming and was credited with the idea of a song bringing together leading Burundian voices for Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. After leaving frontline politics he remained linked to sport and to the presidency as a personal friend and counsellor of Nkurunziza, accompanying youth teams and advising on sporting missions abroad.
Nyenimigabo died on 29 September 2026 after a long illness, aged 77. Iwacu reported that he had rejoined the former head of state he had served as friend, minister and adviser. Tributes recalled a man who could separate political conviction from personal loyalty and who left a mark on Burundi's sporting calendar and cultural institutions.
