Jura Hoshimi was a Tajik poet who devoted most of his working life to writing for children and young people. Named a People's Poet of Tajikistan in 2022, he was one of the best known voices in modern Tajik children's literature, and his verses were taught in schools across the country.

He was born on 9 January 1948 in the Pulodon community of the Kanibadam district in northern Tajikistan. After school in Kanibadam he studied Tajik philology at the Tajik State University, now the Tajik National University, graduating in 1971. His poems had appeared in the republic's newspapers and magazines since 1965, and he entered literature as a poet in the early 1970s.

He began work as a proofreader at the Irfon state publishing house, then became an editor of music programmes at the State Committee for Television and Radio. He headed the literature and arts department of the children's newspaper Pioneer of Tajikistan, now Anboz, was executive secretary of the magazine Chashma and editor in chief of the national weekly for schoolchildren, Gul-gul. He joined the Union of Writers of Tajikistan in 1990, and from 1991 was its consultant on literature for children and young people.

His many collections included Soyaboni sadranga (1980), Oftobak (1986), the alphabet book Man Alifbo mekhonam! (1994, with Abdumalik Bahori), Nini bapo shud (1998), Az yak-yak to lak-lak (2000), Bachchahovu kuchaho (2008) and Musiqii khomushi (2012). He wrote songs for children with leading Tajik composers, his poems were included in school and university textbooks, and he translated poetry from other languages into Tajik. His cycle of patriotic poems Khatti amoni (1989) grew out of his years of service in the Soviet Armed Forces, and his best poems were themselves translated into several languages.

He received the Abuabdullo Rudaki State Prize of Tajikistan in 2012 and the title of People's Poet of Tajikistan in 2022.

Jura Hoshimi died in Dushanbe on 28 October 2026, aged 78, a few days after being taken to hospital with a stroke. The Ministry of Culture of Tajikistan expressed its condolences, noting his significant contribution to modern Tajik literature, especially for children and young readers. A farewell ceremony was held in Dushanbe the following day.

Only found his poems a few years ago while reading up on Tajik children's literature for a project. Didn't grow up with them like Tajik kids did, but you could still feel how much care went into them, especially the alphabet verses. 78 years old, People's Poet since 2022. Strange to feel a loss for someone whose world I only just stepped into.
