M Ghaziul Haque was a Bangladeshi business leader who spent most of his working life at the head of large trading and logistics companies and more than three decades on the board of Eastern Bank, one of the country's leading private commercial banks. He was a founding director of the bank and twice served as its chairman.
He began his professional career with the British firm Bird and Co Ltd, part of the old managing agency tradition in the region. He rose through the company and became its managing director in 1976, when the business was transformed into Birds Bangladesh Limited. He went on to lead MGH Group, which grew into a Singapore headquartered conglomerate operating in more than 23 countries, with interests in supply chain management, cargo services for low cost airlines, airline distribution systems, cross border freight trains, fulfilment centres, FM radio, tea and rubber plantations, food and beverage, and banking. Reports described him as a veteran of the shipping and business sectors.
Haque joined the board of Eastern Bank in 1993, a year after the bank began operating following the restructuring of the former Bank of Credit and Commerce International's business in Bangladesh. He served as chairman from 2000 to 2006 and was later returned to the chair for a second term that lasted until 2018, making him one of the longest serving board members in the bank's history. The bank credited him with strengthening its institutional development and corporate governance.
He was married to Sultana Haque. Their son, Anis Ahmed, followed him into the leadership of Eastern Bank and was serving as its chairman at the time of his father's death. They also had a daughter, Anila Haque.
M Ghaziul Haque died at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka at about 1.10 pm on Monday 5 October 2026. He was 92. The cause of death was not made public. His namaz e janaza was held after Maghrib prayers that evening at Azad Masjid in Gulshan, and he was buried at Banani Graveyard. His death was reported across the Bangladeshi press and mourned by the banking and business communities, who remembered him as one of the figures who shaped the country's private banking sector.
