I don't really know what to say. I only found out she trained right here in Bloomington back in the sixties, at the old beauty academy, and built a whole industry out of it after. That's a strange thing to learn on the day someone dies.

Martha Tilaar was an Indonesian entrepreneur, teacher and beauty specialist who built one of the country's best known cosmetics and herbal medicine groups from a garage salon in Menteng, Jakarta. She died at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta on the morning of 14 October 2026, aged 89. Her family and the Martha Tilaar Group announced the death the same day.
She was born Martha Handana (also known as Tjhie Pwee Giok) on 4 September 1937 in Gombong, in what is now Kebumen Regency, Central Java, then part of the Dutch East Indies. As a child she was steered toward traditional beauty practice by her mother and by a Yogyakarta specialist, Titi Poerwosoenoe. She taught at a primary school, earned an education degree from IKIP Jakarta (now Universitas Negeri Jakarta) and lectured there before following her husband, Henry Alex Rudolf Tilaar, to the United States on a scholarship in 1964. In Bloomington, Indiana, she trained at the Academy of Beauty Culture and worked for three years at Campes Beauty Salon at Indiana University, also offering salon services to Indonesian students and faculty wives.
Back in Jakarta from 1969, she opened Martha's Salon on 3 January 1970 in her father's garage on Jalan Kusumaatmadja in Menteng, with savings from America and help from her family. A second salon followed in Cipete. After study visits to Yves Rocher in France, Mary Quant in Britain and Hartleben in West Germany, she developed traditional Indonesian care and jamu based products, drawing among other sources on recipes from her grandmother Pranoto Liem. In 1977, with Boenjamin Setiawan and Theresia Harsini Setiady of Kalbe Farma, she co founded PT Martina Berto and launched the Sariayu Martha Tilaar line. Factories at Pulo Gadung followed in 1981 and 1986. Brands across the group later included Caring, Belia, Biokos, PAC, Aromatic, Jamu Garden and Dewi Sri Spa, with beauty schools, spas and distribution under the Martha Tilaar Group. The family bought out Kalbe's stake in 1999.
Her awards included honorary doctorates and engineering recognition, Women Entrepreneur of the Year from the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (2008), Ganesa Widya Jasa Utama from Bandung Institute of Technology (2012) and the Bintang Budaya Parama Dharma cultural star from the Indonesian government (2016). She founded Yayasan Martha Tilaar to train women in beauty skills, opened Roemah Martha Tilaar as a museum in Gombong in 2014, and kept Kampoeng Djamoe Organik in Cikarang. She was married to Henry A. R. Tilaar and had four children, including Wulan and Kilala.
Her body lay at the family home in Patra Kuningan, South Jakarta, with burial planned for 16 October 2026 at San Diego Hills Memorial Park in Karawang, West Java. Indonesian outlets including Tempo, CNN Indonesia and Liputan6 reported the death as a loss for the national beauty industry she had helped to build.

In their own words
“Indonesians had a mind set that everything that comes from the west is the best, because we had yet to have cosmetics that were convenient to use.”
