Martin Jelínek was a Czech basketball player who represented Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic and won the Czech league title with Mlékárna Kunín in 1999. A strong, aggressive forward known for his toughness and his ability to mark the opposition's best players, he spent eleven seasons in the Czechoslovak and Czech top divisions. He was the younger brother of Josef Jelínek, the all time leading scorer in Czech competitions. His death was announced on 27 October 2026. He was 55.

He was born on 16 April 1971 in Kutná Hora, the same town as his brother, who was five years older. Josef later said that Martin had followed in his footsteps, collected success at youth level and was tall enough that it was soon clear he could follow him to the top. Martin's breakthrough came in Brno, where he entered the top Czechoslovak league with Sokol I. Brno in the 1990 to 1991 season.

He went on to play for SKP Pardubice, Tonak Nový Jičín, Sparta Praha, BK Žďas Žďár nad Sázavou, Mlékárna Kunín and ASK Chomutov. With Nový Jičín he finished second in the Czech league in 1994, and he played in the league's All Star game in 1995. In the 1998 to 1999 season he won the Czech championship with Mlékárna Kunín, playing alongside his brother. He also played in European club competitions, in the Korać Cup with Nový Jičín and Sparta Praha and in the Cup Winners' Cup with Kunín, scoring 55 points in seven games.

At international level he played for Czechoslovakia at the 1990 European junior championship and the 1992 European under 22 championship, and won seven caps for the Czechoslovak senior team. He last played for the Czech Republic in qualifying for the 1997 European championship. A knee injury at the end of his second season in Nový Jičín shortened his career, and he retired before he turned 30. Years later he and Josef played together again for a Czech veterans team.

Martin Jelínek died after a serious illness in the week before 27 October 2026, when his brother confirmed the news to the Brno daily Rovnost. Josef said their mother had suffered from the same illness, and that the day before he died Martin told him: "I can't go on. We will meet up above." He was also the uncle of the Czech international David Jelínek.

My dad called from Ottawa to tell me, said he used to watch Jelinek play on the old European broadcasts. 1999 title with Kunin, apparently his brother was on that team too. Strange way to hear it, half asleep on another continent.
