Matthias Strauss, known in basketball as Matzi, was a German basketball player who captained the West German national team and spent two decades in the Basketball Bundesliga, winning the national championship with MTV Giessen and reaching three more finals in Berlin. Away from the court he trained as a dental technician and later worked for three decades as a dentist in Berlin.

Strauss was born in Frankfurt am Main on 24 May 1956. He began playing in the 1969 to 1970 season for Eintracht Frankfurt, where he spent five years before moving in 1975 to MTV Giessen, then the reigning German champions. In six seasons with the club in central Hesse he won the Bundesliga title in 1977 to 1978 and the German Cup in 1978 to 1979. Because Bundesliga players of the time earned little from the game, he completed an apprenticeship as a dental technician in Giessen in 1979.

In 1981 he joined the newly promoted DTV Charlottenburg in Berlin, where he played until he retired in 1994. The club kept its place in the top division in his first season and then grew into a contender, reaching the championship final in 1985, in 1991 as BG Charlottenburg and in 1992 as Alba Berlin. Each time the title went to Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Strauss made his debut for the national team at the end of 1975 and played 116 internationals, for many years as captain. He took part in the European Championships of 1981 in Czechoslovakia, where Germany finished tenth, and of 1983 in France, where they finished eighth. After his professional career he kept playing in age group competitions and in 2012 won the German over 55 championship with DBV Charlottenburg.

In 1995 he founded a dental practice with his colleague Michael Melerski on the Hindenburgdamm in Berlin Lichterfelde, where he worked until 2025.

Strauss died on 25 October 2026 after a serious illness, at the age of 70. The German Basketball Federation said it was proud of what he had done for German basketball, and its president Ingo Weiss remembered him as a captain who led the national team with heart, dignity and tireless commitment, and simply a very fine man.

In 1981 he moved to Berlin to join DTV Charlottenburg, newly promoted to the Bundesliga, and stayed until the end of his career in 1994. After staying up in its first season, the club became one of the strongest in the country. It reached the championship final in 1985, and again in 1991 as BG Charlottenburg and in 1992 as Alba Berlin, losing all three finals to Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Strauss made his national team debut at the end of 1975 and went on to play 116 games for West Germany, captaining the team for many years. He played at the 1981 European Championship in Czechoslovakia, where Germany finished tenth, and at the 1983 European Championship in France, where they finished eighth.

After retiring he continued to play for fun in veterans' competitions, and in 2012 won the German over 55 championship with DBV Charlottenburg, beating Jahn Munchen 62 to 42 in the final.
