N. K. Ramachandran Menon was an Indian banker and educationist who founded Bhavans Middle East, a network of Indian curriculum schools across Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Born in 1948 at Paravoor in Ernakulam district, Kerala, to M. G. N. Menon and Padmakshi Amma, he studied at Vignana Vardhini School, then at St Albert's College and Maharaja's College in Ernakulam, where he served as union secretary in 1967.
He moved to Kuwait in 1969 and spent three decades with the National Bank of Kuwait before becoming chief accountant at Gulf Bank. While still in banking he developed a parallel interest in administration and community leadership. In 2000 he began bringing Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, the Indian educational movement founded by K. M. Munshi in 1938, into the Gulf. His first school, the Indian Educational School (IES, Bhavans Kuwait), opened in 2006 as a day-boarding Indian school rooted in Indian values and modern teaching.
From that base the group grew across the region: Private International English School (Bhavans Abu Dhabi) in 2010, Al Saad Indian School in Al Ain in 2014, Bahrain Indian School in 2015, The Smart Indian School in Kuwait in 2016, Bhavans Pearl Wisdom School in Al Ain in 2019, Pearl Wisdom School in Dubai in 2020 and Bhavans Pearl Wisdom School in Sharjah in 2023, with early-years centres including Jack and Jill Pre-School in Kuwait and Piccadilly Nursery in Abu Dhabi. By the time of his death the family said the group ran nine schools and two early-years centres serving thousands of students. Pearl Heritage School in Abu Dhabi opened in August 2026. Menon was reported as the first Indian settled in Kuwait to receive a UAE Golden Visa, in early 2022.
Colleagues described him as a mentor who trusted principals and teachers and who saw schooling as more than exam results: as the shaping of responsible, compassionate people. He is survived by his wife, Sudha Ramachandran, and their children Divya Rajesh Ramachandran, director of Bhavans Middle East, and Sooraj Ramachandran, vice chairman, both chartered accountants living in the UAE.
Menon died on 30 September 2026 at EMC Hospital in Ernakulam, Kerala, aged 78, after treatment for age-related illness. Last rites were held the next day at the family home in Aluva. Bhavans schools across the Gulf closed early that Thursday for condolence assemblies, and staff from several countries travelled to Kerala for the funeral.
