My mother died of cancer last spring and reading this took the wind out of me a little. I only found Đất phương Nam this year, subtitled, binged it after work most nights, and that boy searching the delta for his father got me every time. 73 is no age. Sending this to my husband, who watched half of it with me and fell asleep but still remembers An's name.

Nguyễn Vinh Sơn was a Vietnamese film and television director, known above all for Đất phương Nam (Southern Land), the 1997 television series that became one of the best loved Vietnamese dramas of the 1990s. A Meritorious Artist, he made few films but each was widely admired, and he taught several generations of Vietnamese filmmakers. He died at his home in Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of 22 October 2026, aged 73, after treatment for cancer.
He was born on 6 September 1953 in Quảng Trị province, to a family from Huế, and was the eldest brother in a large family of filmmakers. His brothers include Nguyễn Trinh Hoan, head of the production company HK Film, and the director Nguyễn Minh Cao.
His first major success was Tuổi thơ dữ dội (Fierce Childhood), adapted from the novel by Phùng Quán about a boy caught up in the resistance against French colonial rule. At the 1990 Vietnam Film Festival it won the Silver Lotus, the best director award and the best actor award. Đất phương Nam, adapted in 11 episodes from Đoàn Giỏi's novel Đất rừng phương Nam, followed the orphan boy An as he wandered the Mekong Delta in search of his father. It was a sensation on broadcast, its characters entered popular memory, and it is described as the first Vietnamese television series exported to the United States.
His 2008 feature Trăng nơi đáy giếng (Moon at the Bottom of the Well), set in Huế and starring Hồng Ánh as the teacher Hạnh, won the Silver Lotus at the 16th Vietnam Film Festival. Hồng Ánh was named best actress in the Asia Africa section of the Dubai International Film Festival in 2008, and the film also won an award in Madrid in 2009. Critics admired his slow, meticulous and uncompromising approach, and his refusal to chase quantity.
In later years he kept a low profile. He was a production adviser on Nguyễn Quang Dũng's 2023 film Đất rừng phương Nam, a new adaptation of the novel he had brought to television, and spoke at the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival in 2023. On his death Nguyễn Quang Dũng, who had learned cinematography from him at university, called him a beloved teacher of many generations of directors and a great director of Vietnamese cinema.
