Saw this on an industry newsletter I only half read. Someone wrote "he showed incredible bravery right to the end" and I just sat with that for a minute.

Nick Wilsdon was a British search engine optimisation specialist, consultant and entrepreneur, best known as the founder and chief executive of the SEO agency Torque. Over more than two decades in the industry he became one of the most respected figures in technical and enterprise SEO, admired as much for his generosity to colleagues as for his expertise. He died at home on October 11, 2026, at the age of 50, after a period of illness with cancer.
Wilsdon spent his career at the meeting point of search, technology and large organisations. At Vodafone Group he ran the SEO side of a technical optimisation team for three years, defining group-wide performance measures, working with technology and commercial teams across 21 local markets and training local teams to carry the work on themselves. He later worked as a consultant and edge-compute product owner at eBay, specialising in forensic SEO investigations and in the development and deployment of edge and content delivery network architecture. He also delivered digital transformation projects at NTT DATA UK, founded E3 Business Incubator Limited and mentored start-ups.
He founded Torque, which he led as chief executive, with the aim of building what the company called an equitable, values-led business that felt more like a true collective than a job. He contributed to industry tools and products, spoke at conferences and meetups, wrote for industry and business publications, and served as a judge for industry awards.
Torque announced his death on LinkedIn on October 12, 2026, saying that he had been battling cancer for some time and had died at home over the weekend surrounded by his loving and devoted family. "He showed incredible bravery right to the end," the company wrote, adding that its leadership would continue the business in his name. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable, who had known him for many years, remembered him as always happy and smiling, a giving person who wanted to make those around him happier and smarter.
Tributes poured in from across the search marketing world. Colleagues including David Iwanow, Dawn Anderson, Kevin Gibbons, Lily Ray, Glenn Gabe and Areej AbuAli described a kind, clever and supportive man who had time for everyone, and several credited him with encouraging them to start their own businesses. Torque called him a friend and mentor to so many people and "truly one of the great legends of SEO".
