Patience Akyianu

On 21 September 2026 the CEO Network Ghana announced her death in a statement quoted by MyJoyOnline that evening. The network described her as a dear friend and distinguished CEO and said her passing was a painful loss to the business community, promising further details from the family. MyJoyOnline noted that circumstances surrounding the reported death had not been independently confirmed and that no cause had been made public. Funeral arrangements had not been announced at the time of early reports.

Patience Enyonam Akyianu grew up in Ghana and completed secondary school at Wesley Girls Senior High School in Cape Coast. She later said her father, an educationist, instilled discipline that shaped her work ethic, and that she chose finance because she was strong with figures. At the University of Ghana Business School she earned a first class Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Accounting) around 1992, then an MBA in Finance. She qualified as a professional accountant and joined the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana.

Akyianu began in banking at Standard Chartered Bank as a financial controller and later became CFO of Standard Chartered's South African office for Africa regional operations. She joined Barclays Bank Ghana as Finance Director in November 2008, served as Acting Managing Director from April 2013, and was confirmed as Managing Director, becoming the first woman to lead Barclays Bank Ghana. Profiles credited her with helping turn around the bank's fortunes and with supporting adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards. She held the MD role for about five years before leaving for insurance in 2018. Barclays Bank Ghana later became Absa Bank Ghana.

In October 2018 Akyianu became the first Group CEO of Hollard Ghana Holdings, combining Hollard Insurance Ghana and Hollard Life Assurance Ghana. She described the move from banking to insurance as a leap of faith driven by Hollard's purpose and brand. Under her leadership the group expanded retail and bancassurance partnerships, launched SME-focused cover such as the Asomdwee product with the Ghana Enterprises Agency, and introduced digital products including Araba Hollard. Industry awards recognised growth in non-life business and marketing initiatives during her tenure.

Beyond her executive roles, Akyianu served as an independent non-executive director of Ecobank Ghana and as a director of Hubtel. She was a founding member of the Executive Women Network and the International Women's Forum, Ghana, and an ambassador for the University of Ghana Business School, mentoring students on the bridge from campus to industry. Colleagues and profiles repeatedly described her as passionate about youth leadership and about encouraging women not merely to copy existing leaders but to aim higher.

Akyianu received the Nobles International Award (2013), Africa Female Economic Champion-Banking (CELD, 2014), induction into the Global Women Leaders Hall of Fame (CELD, 2014), and Woman of Excellence in Finance at the Ghana CFO Awards (2015). She was Finance CEO of the Year at the third Ghana CFO Awards in 2017, listed among WomanRising's top 60 corporate women leaders in Ghana, and named African Female Business Leader of the Year in 2021. In 2022 she was Outstanding Woman CEO of the Decade at the Ghana Entrepreneur and Corporate Executive Awards. In May 2025 Otumfuo Osei Tutu II presented her with the Millennium Excellence Award for Finance and Capital Market Excellence at Manhyia Palace.

She was married to lawyer Kwame Akyianu. They had two children, Awurama Ampima Akyianu and Nana Banyin Kojo Akyianu, according to a public profile published by God as CEO. In her 2025 Millennium Excellence Award remarks she thanked God, the award organisers, her Hollard team, and especially the support of her husband and family. Her exact date of birth was not widely published in standard biographical sources.

Akyianu is remembered as a barrier-breaking Ghanaian finance leader who proved that the top of banking and insurance in Ghana was open to women. Her path from Standard Chartered to Barclays MD to Hollard Group CEO, together with board service and mentoring, left a template for younger professionals. Products and partnerships she championed at Hollard aimed to widen access to insurance for ordinary customers and small businesses, extending her influence beyond corporate headquarters.
