Found Listy during a semester in Prague, never thought I'd read Czech politics over breakfast in a hostel kitchen but his pieces made me stay. Heard about this on a bus out of Brno. 42.

Patrik Eichler was a Czech journalist and political commentator who spent his working life at the meeting point of ideas, history and politics. He was director of the Masaryk Democratic Academy, the think tank of Czech social democracy, and an editor of Listy, the bimonthly review for culture and dialogue founded in exile after the Prague Spring. He was a familiar face on Czech television and in public debates as an analyst of national politics.
Born on 29 May 1984, he came to Prague as a student and enrolled at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University. He joined its Student Council in 2003, at the age of twenty, and later chaired it, helping to organise the council's annual commemorations of Jan Palach and of 17 November 1989. He later said that this was where he first learned to speak in public and to practise democracy in miniature.
From 2007 to 2009 he worked as an editor at Literarni noviny. He helped prepare the permanent exhibition of the Museum of the German speaking inhabitants of the Czech lands in Usti nad Labem, co-authored the book and exhibition Jan Palach 69 in 2009, and worked on the exhibition and catalogue For Freedom, Justice and Solidarity, a history of social democracy in the Czech lands, published in 2013, 2016 and 2018. In 2016 and 2017 he served as spokesman for Jiri Dienstbier, the minister for human rights, equal opportunities and legislation.
At the Masaryk Democratic Academy he served as secretary and, from 2014, deputy director. In 2022 he became director after the resignation of the former prime minister Vladimir Spidla. From 2014 he was also an editor of Listy, and in 2021 he co-wrote, with Tomas Tichak, the editorial marking fifty years since the magazine's first regular issue. He co-edited the volume Masaryk: A Politician at the European Level and contributed to a 2022 collection on Jaroslav Sabata and Charter 77.
His death, at the age of 42, was announced by the Masaryk Democratic Academy on 2 November 2026 and confirmed to the Czech News Agency by Pavel Saradin, deputy chairman of the academy's board. No cause of death was made public. Czech Radio's news site described him in its headline as one of the most honest intellectuals.
