Never knew his name until today, only ever read Domingo's in the program notes. Funny how the people behind the voice stay invisible for decades. I came to opera late, in my thirties, and it was Domingo's Otello that pulled me in. Someone had to be making that career possible all those years. Rest well.

Peter Hofstötter was the personal representative and close friend of the opera singer and conductor Plácido Domingo for nearly sixty years. Working almost entirely behind the scenes, he managed the details of one of the busiest careers in the history of opera, travelling with Domingo to performances around the world. His death was announced by Domingo on 24 October 2026.
Little has been published about Hofstötter's own early life, education or family. What is known comes mainly from Domingo's tribute. The two men met in Vienna in 1967, brought together by Hofstötter's love of opera, at a time when Domingo was beginning his international career. From then on Hofstötter became one of the most constant figures in the singer's working life, through the decades in which Domingo became one of the most widely travelled singers of his generation and later also worked as a conductor and opera company director.
As Domingo's representative he handled the practical side of a career that ran to thousands of performances on the world's stages. Domingo wrote of "sixty years of great, silent support" and of his friend's "always meticulous work with extreme precision in managing every detail". The critic Norman Lebrecht, writing on Slippedisc, recalled that wherever Domingo happened to be, Hofstötter was never far away, and that the singer would often answer enquiries by saying "just ask Peter".
His role went beyond business. Domingo said Hofstötter had stood by him through the most difficult moments of his life, had supported his family, and for almost three years had looked after his son Plácido Domingo Jr. like a son while he was studying in Vienna. The two had seen each other only days before his death in Vienna, and a month earlier Hofstötter had been with Domingo in Budapest.
Domingo announced the death in a personal message on social media on 24 October 2026, which was reported by Slippedisc that day and by OperaWire on 28 October. The date, place and cause of death were not made public. The soprano Angela Gheorghiu also paid tribute, calling him "a true gentleman, always ready with a smile and a compliment". He is remembered in the opera world as the discreet, precise and loyal presence behind a great career.

True, the ones who do the work behind the scenes rarely get the credit until it's too late.
