Petr Slaný was a Czech footballer who played as a forward and midfielder for Baník Ostrava, Dukla Prague and Sparta Prague and won one cap for Czechoslovakia. He was a key member of the Baník side that won the club's first Czechoslovak league title in 1975 to 1976, and he later won the Czechoslovak Cup with Sparta in 1980. He died on 22 October 2026, aged 74, after a short and serious illness.
Slaný was born in Olomouc on 1 September 1952 and came through the youth ranks of TJ Sigma Hodolany. He made his league debut for Baník Ostrava as an 18 year old in June 1971, coming on against Dukla Prague in the last match of the season, and the following season he played in all 30 league games.
After two seasons with Dukla Prague during his military service, he returned to Ostrava and was one of the most used players in the 1975 to 1976 campaign that brought Baník its first championship. In October 1976 he started in attack alongside Verner Lička and Zdeněk Lorenc in the famous European Cup tie against Bayern Munich at Bazaly, forcing a fine save from Sepp Maier and setting up Lička's header in a 2 to 1 win. The next month he won his only full international cap, playing a half against the world champions West Germany in Hanover.
In 1977 he moved to Sparta Prague, explaining later that his wife's health had suffered from the industrial air of Ostrava. At Sparta he became a prolific scorer, netting 14 league goals in 1979 to 1980, and he helped the club win the national cup in 1980. In all he played 277 Czechoslovak top flight matches and scored 66 goals, and he also represented his country at youth, under 21 and Olympic level.
Slaný called himself half Baník and half Sparta, and above all a Moravian from Olomouc. In April 2026 he returned to Ostrava for a reunion of club legends to mark 50 years since the title. Baník announced his death on behalf of his family, and the farewell was held privately.

In their own words
“Am I a Sparta man or a Baník man? Fifty fifty. Above all I am a Moravian, because I come from Olomouc.”
