Rahal Bulathsinhala was a Sri Lankan character actor of stage, television and film, known to a wide audience as Loku Hamuduruwo, the chief monk of the village temple in the popular teledrama Nadagamkarayo. He came to acting late, after more than two decades as an officer of the Department of Prisons, and was married to the actress and comedian Susila Kottage.
The son of an army officer, Bulathsinhala first hoped to follow his father into the security forces. Instead he joined the prison service, where he worked for about 22 years. Alongside that career he became involved in stage plays, and it was in the theatre that he met Susila Kottage. He later said that after a disappointment in love he had once thought of entering the monastic life, and that his relationship with Kottage changed the course of his life.
On television he played Podi Mahaththaya in Kopi Kade, the long running Rupavahini serial in which his wife also appeared, and he worked in teledramas including Kodi Gaha Yata. His film career began with Rodaya in 1995 and went on to include Pem Mal Mala (1997), Left Right Sir (2004), in which he played Steven Cooray, Que Sera (2014), Sama Kumaru Kathawa (2019) and, more recently, Theja. In 2026 he played a senior monk in the short film The Empty Robe.
His best known role came with Nadagamkarayo, broadcast on Swarnavahini from January 2021 to August 2022 and one of the most watched Sri Lankan teledramas of its time. As Loku Hamuduruwo, the monk who defends the village's unruly young men, he won the respect of a new generation of viewers. He changed his diet and daily routine to prepare for the part, and he returned to the character in the spin-off series Kolam Kuttama. He spoke about his prison years, his work on the monk role and his family life on programmes such as Ma Bala Kale on Neth FM and Adaraneeya Jeewithaya and Asanga Live on Siyatha TV.
Rahal Bulathsinhala died on 22 October 2026 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo, according to family sources. He was 73 and lived in Mulleriyawa. The cause of death was not made public. His death was reported the same morning by Newswire, Gossip Lanka and other Sri Lankan media, which remembered him as a familiar and dedicated veteran of local drama.
