Ralph Sonnenberg was a Dutch businessman who led Hunter Douglas, the window coverings company behind brands such as Luxaflex, Duette and Silhouette, for half a century and built it into the world market leader in its field. One of the richest people in the Netherlands and famously private, he died on 25 September 2026, aged 92. His family made his death public on 29 October 2026.

He was born in Rotterdam in 1934, a year after his father, Henry Sonnenberg, a Jewish industrialist, fled Germany for the Netherlands with the machine factory he had founded in Düsseldorf in 1919. Fearing rising antisemitism, his father sent him to New York at the age of four, and he grew up in the United States, studying at Williams College in the 1950s. In 1946 his father had joined forces with John Hunter to make Venetian blinds, the origin of the Hunter Douglas name.

Ralph Sonnenberg joined his father's business in 1956 and took charge of it in 1972. Over the following decades he expanded Hunter Douglas into a multinational with operations in more than 100 countries. The company was listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange and registered in Curaçao, but he kept a majority of the shares throughout, increasing his stake from 53 to 79 percent in 2005. His sons, David and Marko, joined him at the top of the company.

At the end of 2021 the family agreed to sell a majority stake to the investment firm 3G Capital. At the time Hunter Douglas employed about 23,000 people and had annual sales of about 4.6 billion dollars. The family kept a quarter of the shares, and Sonnenberg devoted himself to investing. In the 2026 Quote 500 list of the richest Dutch people, published days after his death, he was ranked third with an estimated fortune of 6.9 billion euros.

Sonnenberg moved to Switzerland in 1992 and lived at Meggen on Lake Lucerne. He rarely spoke to the press. A former employee recalled that in the Rotterdam canteen he simply joined the back of the queue. In a statement, his sons remembered him as a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a legendary entrepreneur, investor and mentor.

Just replaced my blinds with Luxaflex last spring. Had no idea there was a guy behind that name until now.

Under his leadership the originally Dutch company became the global leader in window coverings, with operations in more than 100 countries and brands including Luxaflex, Duette and Silhouette. Hunter Douglas was listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange, but it was registered in Curaçao, where its shareholder meetings were held, and Sonnenberg always kept majority control. In 2005, aged 71, he raised his stake from 53 percent to 79 percent; his sons Marko and David had become co-directors a year earlier.

On the last day of 2021 it was announced that 3G Capital would take a majority stake in Hunter Douglas. The company then had around 23,000 employees and annual revenue of about 4.6 billion dollars. The Sonnenberg family retained 25 percent after the company left the stock exchange, and Sonnenberg turned his attention to investing, which his sons said he pursued with passion every day until his death.
