My mother called me at 6am her time just to tell me, she knew I'd want to know before I saw it online. The Octagon fight with Chuck Norris was the first thing we ever agreed was good cinema. 75 years old.

Richard Norton was an Australian martial artist, actor, stunt performer and fight choreographer whose career ran from Hong Kong action cinema in the 1980s to the Mad Max films of the 2010s and 2020s. He died in Melbourne on 30 March 2025, aged 75.
Born in Croydon, a suburb of Melbourne, on 6 January 1950, he began judo at 11 and earned a black belt in Goju-ryu karate at 17. In 1970 he became chief instructor at Bob Jones's Melbourne dojo, and with Jones he went on to create Zen Do Kai, a hybrid self defence system built for the security industry. He worked as a bodyguard for touring musicians including the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, ABBA, Linda Ronstadt and Fleetwood Mac.
His first film role came in Chuck Norris's The Octagon in 1980, and his climactic fight with Norris was later ranked among the greatest screen fights of its time. He became a familiar face in Hong Kong action films, facing Jackie Chan in City Hunter and Mr. Nice Guy and Sammo Hung in Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars, and he starred opposite Cynthia Rothrock in China O'Brien and Lady Dragon. In all he worked on more than 80 films and television programmes.
Behind the camera he was a respected fight coordinator, starting with Walker, Texas Ranger in 1993 and going on to The Condemned, Mad Max: Fury Road, Suicide Squad, Dark Phoenix and The Suicide Squad. He also played the Prime Imperator in Mad Max: Fury Road and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. He held high grades in several arts, including a 10th degree black belt in Zen Do Kai, an 8th degree in Chun Kuk Do and a 6th degree in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and was inducted into the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2014.
Norton married the Australian actress Judy Green in 1993. She announced his death on social media on 30 March 2025, and tributes followed from Chuck Norris and many others in film and martial arts.
On 28 October 2026 the Victorian coroner, David Ryan, found that Norton had suffered a cardiac arrest after injecting two unapproved peptides, CJC1295 and Ipamorelin, prescribed by a doctor for pain and muscle recovery, and that he had been taking double the prescribed dose. The coroner recommended that Australia's medicines regulator review whether such peptides should be available on prescription at all.
