Saeeda Kamal, known to family and friends as Tulu, was a Bangladeshi artist and freedom fighter. The youngest daughter of the poet and women's rights pioneer Sufia Kamal, she served as a nurse at the Bangladesh Field Hospital during the 1971 Liberation War and later built a long career in the fine arts.
She was born into one of the best known literary and activist families of Bengal. Her mother, Sufia Kamal, married Kamaluddin Ahmed in 1939. Saeeda grew up with her elder sister Sultana Kamal, who became a lawyer, human rights activist and adviser to a caretaker government, and her brothers Shahed Kamal, a journalist and University of Dhaka teacher, Shoeb Kamal and Sajed Kamal. She also had an elder half-sister, Amena Kahhar, from her mother's first marriage.
When the Liberation War broke out in 1971, Saeeda and Sultana Kamal crossed into Tripura in India and joined the medical team of Captain Akhtar Ahmed, an army physician who had started treating wounded fighters in a cowshed near the border. The team, which also included Dr Sitara Begum, set up a tented hospital near the Sector 2 headquarters at Melaghar. With support from the physicians Zafrullah Chowdhury and M A Mobin and from the provisional government, it grew into the 200-bed Bangladesh Field Hospital at Bishramganj, which opened on 26 August 1971. For her work there Saeeda Kamal received the Commander-in-Chief's Special Commendation.
After the war she studied fine arts at the University of Dhaka and then trained in design at Kala Bhavana, the art school of Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, India. Her work was shown in many solo and group exhibitions in Bangladesh and abroad, and obituaries in the Bangladeshi press credited her with a significant contribution to the development of the country's fine arts.
Saeeda Kamal died at around 7:30 in the morning on Sunday 18 October 2026 in a private hospital in Dhaka, aged 74. Her sister Sultana Kamal said she had been suffering from pneumonia and kidney complications, had been admitted to hospital the day before and had been on life support overnight. Her body was taken to the mortuary of BIRDEM General Hospital, and her family planned funeral prayers and burial at Azimpur Graveyard on the Tuesday after her only daughter returned from London. Her brother Shahed Kamal had died earlier the same year, on 4 July 2026.

In their own words
“The final rites will be held after her only daughter returns from London. Until then, her body will be kept at the BIRDEM General Hospital mortuary.”
