Tomasz Fogiel was a Polish stage, film, television and dubbing actor, singer and teacher who spent more than four decades as a soloist of the Danuta Baduszkowa Musical Theatre in Gdynia. Colleagues called him the theatre's nestor and its walking encyclopaedia. He died on 15 October 2026, aged 73.

He was born in Poznan on 1 January 1953, the son of the actor Aleksander Fogiel, and grew up in Szczecin and Lodz, where he finished primary and secondary school. In 1975 he graduated from the acting department of the Leon Schiller National Film, Television and Theatre School in Lodz.

He began his stage career at the Teatr Nowy in Lodz (1975 to 1979) and then joined the Teatr Wybrzeze in Gdansk (1979 to 1985), where his performance as Maly in Slawomir Mrozek's Drugie danie won him a SPATiF award at the Kalisz Theatre Meetings. In 1985 he moved to the Musical Theatre in Gdynia. He had initially planned only a short stay, but Gdynia became his artistic home for the rest of his life, and there he developed as a singer and dancer as well as an actor.

Audiences remembered him above all from Jerzy Gruza's production of Fiddler on the Roof, in which he played Motel Kamzoil and later the innkeeper Mordcha, performing in it about 500 times. He was Herod and Peter in Jesus Christ Superstar, Old Mincel and Doctor Szuman in Wojciech Koscielniak's Lalka (2010), and the Blind Man in Koscielniak's Chlopi (2013). His many other roles in Gdynia included parts in Man of La Mancha, Les Miserables, My Fair Lady, Shrek and Zly.

On screen he appeared in supporting and guest roles in television series such as Daleko od szosy, Radio Romans, Lokatorzy and Sasiedzi, and he worked extensively in dubbing; he voiced the painter Zdzislaw Beksinski in the documentary Beksinscy. Album wideofoniczny. For many years he also taught at the Danuta Baduszkowa State Vocal and Acting Studio in Gdynia, where students remembered him as demanding but fair, and he organised extra classes including fencing camps.

He received the award of the Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship on the theatre's 50th anniversary and, in 2025, the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis. The theatre announced his death on 15 October 2026, describing him as a nestor, a great actor, a man of the theatre, a teacher, a friend and the good spirit of the backstage. The cause of his death was not made public.

My mom called from Minnesota to tell me, she still has the local paper article from when I lived out there. Caught him as Mordcha in Fiddler on the Roof at the Gdynia theatre a few years back, didn't understand half the jokes but the whole room was laughing. Sorry to hear it.
