Had a documentary on Polish state radio history queued up for a research project, his name came up twice before I even knew he'd died today. Seventy seven. Strange how that happens.
Their story
Wiktor Legowicz was a Polish radio journalist who spent more than five decades with Programme 3 of Polish Radio, known to listeners as Trójka. He ran the station as its programme director from 1983 to 1991, served as its deputy director from 1994 to 1997, and in 1992 created "Informator…
Wiktor Legowicz was a Polish radio journalist who spent more than five decades with Programme 3 of Polish Radio, known to listeners as Trójka. He ran the station as its programme director from 1983 to 1991, served as its deputy director from 1994 to 1997, and in 1992 created "Informator Ekonomiczny", a daily economics programme that set out to explain the economy to ordinary listeners in plain language. He died on 15 October 2026, aged 77.
He was born on 2 April 1949 in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, the son of the philosopher and historian of philosophy Jan Legowicz. He studied pedagogy at the University of Warsaw and graduated in 1971. He found his way to radio through a student placement in his third year, choosing the children's department that was then based in the Trójka building on Myśliwiecka Street in Warsaw. Through it he met the people of Trójka, and, as he said in 2017, he stayed there from then on.
He was linked with the station from the early 1970s and became its programme director in 1983, leading it through the last years of the Polish People's Republic and the start of the democratic transition. After his years as director he turned to economics. In the summer of 1992 the then director, Jacek Ejsmond, asked him in a corridor whether he could prepare an economics magazine that would explain the subject simply. Drawing on his training as a teacher, he made a pilot that the director liked, and "Informator Ekonomiczny" went on air on 12 October 1992. He presented it for many years and also hosted "Bardzo Ważny Projekt" and "Bardzo Ważny Problem Europejski". From 2017 he was one of the presenters of "Winien i ma".
Away from the station he was deputy editor in chief of the daily "Nowa Europa", wrote for the monthly "Radio-Lider" and taught journalism at the University of Warsaw. He won the Ostre Pióro award in 1999, 2002 and 2005, as well as a prize from the President of the National Bank of Poland and the Marian Krzak Journalism Award of the Polish Bank Association. Poland made him a Knight of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2000 and an Officer of the order in 2015, both times for his service to Polish Radio.
Trójka announced his death on 15 October 2026 on its social media accounts. Its current and former journalists wrote that he had kept in touch with them after he retired, calling, supporting and helping, and thanked him as a wonderful colleague and teacher. The cause of death was not made public. Colleagues and guests remembered him as a journalist of the old school who could turn numbers and economic jargon into clear, friendly radio.

In their own words
“Wykorzystałem więc moje pedagogiczne wykształcenie, zrobiłem próbną audycję, tzw. zerówkę, która spodobała się dyrektorowi i… ruszyliśmy!”
Recalling the start of "Informator Ekonomiczny" in a 2017 Trójka interview for its 25th anniversary (So I used my training as a teacher, made a pilot programme that the director liked, and off we went!)
“Dziękujemy Ci za wszystko, byłeś wspaniałym kolegą i nauczycielem. Będziemy bardzo tęsknić.”
