Winfried Matter was a German motorsport safety entrepreneur and sports administrator. His roll bars and roll cages protected rally and touring car drivers for decades, and as president of the Deutscher Sportfahrer Kreis (DSK) from 1985 to 2005 he turned a small club into what the association calls Europe's largest independent organisation of sport drivers. He died in the night leading into 15 October 2026, aged 78, after a long illness.
Matter was the junior partner in the family firm Kurt Matter in Karlsdorf-Neuthard near Bruchsal, which had made breathing apparatus and diving equipment since 1952. When the FIA made roll bars and roll cages compulsory in 1970, he saw a gap in the market. He had bars built to FIA rules and to calculations from the state engineering school in Karlsruhe, and Matter became the first maker to supply roll bars and cages with an ONS certificate and TUV type approval. Almost every German car maker became a customer, and the red Matter safety belts followed. The slogan "ohne Matter platter", roughly "flatter without Matter", became well known in the paddock. Under the name Team Matter Sicherheit, Gerd Behret contested the German Rally Championship from 1971 and won the title in 1973. Matter also ran companies in Britain and France, among them Safety Devices in the UK.
He was a keen driver himself. He liked to tell how, on the night of 21 January 1973, he was driving his Porsche 911 on the A3 near Cologne to meet Achim Warmbold for the Monte Carlo Rally when another car hit him on black ice. Nobody was hurt, and he called it his second birthday.
Matter joined the DSK in 1972. On 3 February 1985 the members elected him president in succession to Albrecht Krebs, although a family bereavement kept him away from the meeting. Within days he sent his colleagues a seven-page plan called DSK-Zukunft, calling for more members, professional press work, a race service for private drivers and regional meetings at the circuits. He opened membership to under-18s, which later allowed Norbert Vettel to sign up his ten-year-old son Sebastian. He worked with the ADAC, AvD, DMV and ONS but argued hard with the governing bodies whenever drivers' interests were at stake. The DSK remembered him as angular, combative and often undiplomatic, but always concerned with the cause.
He stepped down on 26 February 2005 at the Nurburgring to concentrate on his business, receiving the Nurburgring's Golden Badge of Honour, and was later honorary president. From 2003 he was based in Shanghai, where his consultancy says he helped shape the management concept for the Shanghai International Circuit before founding Matter Motorsport Consulting. In 2023 the DSK honoured him for 50 years of membership.
The DSK announced his death on 17 October 2026. President Karl-Friedrich Ziegahn said Matter had given the association an enormous boost at a decisive moment and had won it a voice and a hearing, not only in the paddock but also in politics.
